View Full Version : Epiphone or Gibson

I have a budget of around £600 that will allow me to either buy an expensive ltd edition epiphone Les Paul or a low end Gibson i.e. a 2017 Les Paul T.

Would I be better getting the low end Gibson or a top Epiphone?

I do intend to go and try a few out, but I was wondering what everyone else thought.

Gibson - no question! The low end Gibsons sound awesome and they feel great, too!
Plus they are value stable. I wouldn't think twice. Have played the entire 2016 faded line and all of them sounded great.

All I know is that if I were to go that route, I would definitely do what Jimi said and look at the Gibson faded series. Granted, you might not like the look/feel, but I think I'd actually prefer it.

It was a Les Paul Faded T I was looking at. I love the simple & clean look of them.

I just bought a Tribute T hopefully to arrive tomorrow, the Faded T are as excellent with a slightly more rustique finish.
You cannot go wrong with these Gibsons - they are the best bang for the buck and they are highly inspiring.

Mine arrived! The shop mixed up 2017 with 2016, so I received a 2016 model.
What a beauty - sounds and plays great. I'll keep it!
Here's a super rough take I made - no time today heading off to a party.

Sounds great Jimi, do you know if they have a similar model with the Peter Green phase opposition thingy ?

I think there's currently no model with the phase mod. Even the 2010 Gary Moore signature didn't have it.
But I assume it's easy to to this mod. Could be done in a matter of half an hour, I guess.

Will change the nut to real bone - other than that no mods planned. The guitar feels perfect.

Dear Jimi, thanks for the prompt reply I'm so in love with that particular blues tone (Peter Green, Freddie King, Sean Costello)

Jimi, nice guitar! I picked up a 50s Les Paul Tribute Goldtop back in 2011. Love it. You cannot campare the feel of these Gibsons to the Epi. Also, the internals are top notch. You don't get the Gibby components in the Epi. Something to think about.

I since had my LP modded with "faux binding." Actually, it's not fake it's just exposing the wood a la PRS. It looks even more amazing now.

Thanks! My guitar tech showed me video on how easily the faux binding can be done with a razor blade. Maybe gonna try in the future - for now I just enjoy every bit of its simplicity. However, by all my love for Epis and my highest respect for the Chinese building quality, a Gibson is Gibson is a Gibson is a Gibson ;-)

Dang it. The Tributes even come in a gold top. The last thing I need is GAS . . .

Less time than that, if you're handy with a soldering iron. Just reverse the hot and ground pickup wire connections for one (not both!) of the pickups. Doesn't matter which on a 2-humbucker guitar. This doesn't change the tone of either pickup when used individually, but they'll be out of phase when played together.

Nice to see "G" putting out a nice quality guitar that a normal human can afford.

Nice demo Jimi!
