Hi, to you all..............forgot to introduce myself before I posted elsewhere............apologies Guys.

Have used Rob's site many times and it only seemed natural to find out who else finds it of use.......

It's easier to say what I don't play...........Heavy metal, grunge and 2000 notes per second stuff, never touch it..............

Apart from that anything goes, Stones, Rock...and Roll, Acoustic Ragtime, Queen...........ah......yes.....and the Blues....Robert Johnson and upwards..........a bit of Rockabilly........Rev Gary Davis........AC/DC........I would call it all 'Good Music'

Anyway here is a picture of my current arsenal............

Welcome Fingers! (Great name) - that's a stunning collection of guitars you got! I also have a Santana SE & AD50VT, there's lots of Vox players here and indeed Tele players so you'll fit right in. Interesting also that you've got both a Line6 Spider and a Vox Valvetronix - there's been many debates on here on the merits of these two amps, it'd be great to get your unique perspective.

Welcome again and enjoy the forum.:DR

Hi Fingers
Welcome aboard mate. Nice to see another Fretter with a hearty toy collection. I should get treatment for mine. I hope that doesn't happen for you...or maybe it should...because you'll end up with more toys. Ya, that part I haven't figured out yet.

Enjoy.

Welcome fingers,

There are a lot of friendly folks on this site, and lots of good discussions on all kinds of topics surrounding guitar playing, music, etc.

I like your collection of toys!
Tell us more about your 335? Is it a Gibson or Epiphone (I couldn't see the headstock so I wasn't sure). I really like 335's too although I don't own one right now.

Well Rob, Ahhh....yes, closest to my heart.......................?

Well..........here we go,

The Kimbara 12 string was my 2nd guitar back in 1977........yep I learned to play guitar on it..............The first time I popped my cherry was standing on one leg in a hammock............why have an easy life.............?

The acoustic Yamaha FG345 II is the first guitar my wife bought me, back in '79. It has the most beautiful sound to it, I love playing everything on it.

The banjo, I was given, for those....."Squeal like a pig, Boy!" moments.....and duelling banjoes................

The PRS Santana SEII........my wife bought me, 3 years ago as I fancied having a go at the electric guitar, along with the Line 6.

It was only a few weeks later that I found out about the Brian May copies..........just had to have one....and bought the lil' Vox at the same time.

The mini May guitar I bought for my son as he is learning to play.........he is stunning at 8 years old......
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/fingers23/DSC01232.jpg

The spanish/classical was bought for my daughter to learn on at school and now Jon takes it in...........on his first lesson I sent him in with the mini May and the lil' Vox and he played the intro and solo from "I want to break free"...the Queen toon, you should have seen the look on the teachers face as Jon was playing...........awesome.........he was asked to bring an acoustic in next week.......

Anyway, the Peavy Strat is Jons and very good it is.

So, now I am down to the Keefs Telecasters and 335.......

I had a big surge of GAS for one of these......
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/fingers23/krfire.jpg

Soooooooo..........as I was turning 50 at christmas, my wife offered to get me one........a Japanese 52ri, modified to have a Lollar Imperial humbucker fitted by Charlie Chandler.........who turns out to be the guy that Keef and Ronnie Wood send their guitars to before they go on tour.

I went to see the Stones 2 months before 'My' Micawber was ready...........Ohhhhh, I just had to get a Tele after that so went and bought the Lil' squier butterscotch, fitted a Seth Lover H/B to it etc etc............

.............Then 2 days before christmas I take my wife to our local emporium to get a strap for the 52ri..............while she is paying for it, present from the kids, I go off to wander, as you do,....................and there was my sighting of an Ebony Sheraton....................my wife came up behind me and said "Mmmm...I love black guitars, shall I get it you for christmas?"

.....................so in the space of 48 hours I got the 52ri and the Sheraton to complete the Keef set.........
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/fingers23/RollingStonesLive8.jpg

......................and there you have it, a story for each of the guitars.

So, Rob, in answer to your question, they are all dear to my heart.

The Yamaha 6 string is my desert island guitar and the PRS is the electric I go to when learning new bits..........................

Sorry for the ramble....................

Yo Fingers,
Very nice collection of axes you have there! And that is supercool that your kids are players too.

Hey, how do you like your Seth Lover in your Squier tele? Pretty soon I plan to replace the H/B in the neck of my Squier tele...I've been leaning toward a GFS Mean 90 (not exactly a H/B, but I think a p-90 would sound good in a tele neck). Still haven't made up my mind though, and would love to hear your review of the Seth Lover in the Tele.

I got a tele with an H/B neck aiming for that Keef sound too! ...but the stock H/B in mine sounds a bit muddy (although I do like the beefy edge it gives). And I really love chicken pickin' and emulating steel pedal bends with the bridge pick up...man, teles are great, glad I finally got one!

Wow, Thanks for posting that Fingers! It's great to hear Keith just by himself doing some good old fashioned Travis picking...great stuff. Love those bends he was throwing in there, very expressive. Wish he would release more material like that....I've heard there's a sequel cd to their acoustic cd "Stripped" which is available as a bootleg (I guess maybe its more acoustic stuff that didn't make it onto "Stripped")...been meaning to try to track down a copy of it.
I like a lot of flashy players too, but when it comes to creating ingenious riffs with a serious groove, Keef is the king in my book. The flashy lead players get most of the attention, but there is just as much of an art to rhythm playing as lead playing, and rhythm playing can be even more demanding (playing "Brown Sugar" always gives my fingers quite a workout!)

Sure do..........in a very remedial fingerpickin' way..............love some of the old bluegrass...............my aim with it is to play 'Muleskinner Blues' as per Don Mclean on his 'Solo' album..........stunning...................and of course 'Foggy mountain breakdown'...............if I end up playing them as I want, then I will never learn another banjo toon..............

Summer BBQ's with the banjo backed by an acoustic guitar, playing twelve bar bluegrass...................who needs beer?..................Well I do I suppose!!!!!!!

By the way Keef plays a mean piano..........he can play both soulful and also do a crackin' Lil' Richard boogie........................proper bloke.....eh?

I had a dream a couple of weeks ago that I could play the banjo...(maybe its because I've been listening to the Best of Flatt and Scruggs cd a lot lately).
I've never even touched a banjo...is the tuning anything similar to standard tuning on a guitar? I've been considering buying a cheapo student banjo one of these days, but if the tuning's way different that would be a big deterrent for me. (Everytime I pick up a mandolin I am befuddled as to how to play it because their tuning seems to be upside down from that of the guitar.)

From wikipedia:

The modern banjo comes in a variety of different forms, including four- (plectrum and tenor banjos) and five-string versions. A six-string version, tuned and played similar to a guitar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar) is gaining popularity. In almost all of its forms the banjo's playing is characterised by a fast strumming or arpeggiated (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arpeggio) right hand, although there are many different playing styles.

......................the 5 string banjo......................................

Many tunings are used for the five-string banjo. Probably the most common, particularly in bluegrass, is the open G tuning (gDGBd). In earlier times, the tuning gCGBd was commonly used instead. Other tunings common in old-time music include double C (gCGCd), sawmill or mountain minor (gDGCd) also called Modal or Mountain Modal, and open D (f#DF#Ad). These tunings are often taken up a tone, either by tuning up or using a capo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capo).
The fifth (drone) string is the same gauge as the first, but it is generally five frets shorter, three quarters the length of the rest (one notable exception is Vega's long necked Pete Seeger model, where the fifth string is seven frets shorter). This presents special problems for using a capo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capo) to change the pitch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_%28music%29) of the instrument. For small changes (going up or down one or two semitones, for example) it is possible to simply retune the fifth string. Otherwise various devices are available to effectively shorten the string. Many banjo players favour the use of model railroad spikes (usually installed at the seventh fret and sometimes at others), under which the string can be hooked to keep it pressed down on the fret (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fret).

.................the 4 string banjo...................................

The plectrum banjo has four strings, lacking the shorter fifth string, and 22 frets; it is usually tuned CGBD. As the name suggests, it is usually played with a guitar-style pick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plectrum) (that is, a single one held between thumb and forefinger), unlike the five-string banjo, which is almost always played with a thumbpick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thumbpick) and two fingerpicks, or occasionally with bare fingers. The plectrum banjo evolved out of the five-string banjo, to cater to styles of music involving strummed chords.
A further development is the tenor banjo, which also has four strings and is also typically played with a plectrum. It has a shorter neck of 19 frets, and is usually tuned CGDA, like a mandola (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandola), or GDAE, like a mandolin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandolin) (but an octave lower). These tunings became popular around the turn of the century due to the growing popularity of the mandolin. A previous tuning was DGBE (like the 1st four of a guitar) which is now regaining popularity due to the number of guitarists who double on banjo. The tenor banjo has become a standard instrument for Irish traditional music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_traditional_music), where is mainly used in its longer 19 frets variant. Tenor Banjo was also a common rhythm instrument in traditional or Dixieland Jazz because its volume can compete with brass instruments.

Thanks for the info, Tot Ou Tard! I usually play in standard tuning, but being a Keef fan, I've messed around in open G, so that's good to know that it's the main bluegrass key for 5 string banjo.

tot_Ou_tard
March 14th, 2007, 06:51 AM
No problem guitarist.

Keef removes the 6th string from his guitars in open G anyway. The 5-string banjo does you 1/4 better by shortening the 5th string too.

Hi everyone,
My name is Joshua and I live in Cincinnati OH and I have been playing guitar since I was 6 and 1/2 Y/O. I'm now 25 and started my playing wanting to be like my cousin who played Metal, and Shred. My first real guitar other than the one I started learning on was a deluxe MIA strat. I was an idiot at 9 and wanted to sell it (and ended up selling it for a Warlock). I have played many styles and now after all the dust has settled I play blues and rock with a little indy. I have two guitars and a handful of amps. My gear is highly modded and I will soon post pics and explain it all. I am a tube amp freak and I love quirky gear as well as hard to find stuff. Im also a tone snob.

Its a nick-name of my favorite character in a novel - who by coincidence is named Joshua Calvert ( My last name is Donaldson) - and it is also my Gammertag on Xbox live. Don't worry about the playing since I was young. Unfortunately I broke my hand sword fighting two years ago and lost almost all the dexterity in my pinky on my left hand. Adapting to playing with it all stiffed up really slowed me down. I cant shred anymore. I can still play good, but not like I used to.

No, I used to take Wu Shu; Chinese broad sword. Its mostly like a dance, but it can be employed as a VERY effective fighting style. We were practicing, I disarmed my sparring partner, and he is waaaaay better than me. So before I knew it he did a tumble backwards, grabbed his sword and hit me....IN THE HAND! I will make another post soon. Im trying to get ahold of Bloozcat to ask him some questions about his Blues custom 30. Either he hasn't been on lately or he's ignoring my noobness to the forum.
