View Full Version : Forgotten gems!

I recently went through my cd collection and I found out that there are bands that released some good work but ruin their reputation due to heavy fluctuation or simply putting out bad records.

Two gems for me that have almost been forgotten are:

Operation:Mindcrime & Empire

by Queensryche.

Have you also got a typical example for the a.m. situation?

. . . Mindcrime is one of those albums that tells a timeless story about political corruption and the government using the common man (or woman in Sister Mary's case) as pawns to acheive their goals -- it is a classic. I love the song writing on this album and the use of transition and effect. The production, however, is another story. Those whiny, thin, over-processed guitar tones are hard to get past. But it was the 80's, and this type of production was the norm, unfortunately.

Queensryche ruined it with Empire...that and the death of the power ballad...now that I think of it, Empire may have been the death of the power ballad. Dont get me wrong that album was great, but it was weak in compairison to thier previous efforts. Im a big fan of thier first album and The Lady Wore Black (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAKLlCp4Ly4)

Just found this too...Queen Of The Reich (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpPDFIswQ-c&mode=related&search=)

BTW there is alot of talk about a "Mindcrime II" on Sirius Hairnation.

I've never gotten into Empire either. I think it's because I heard "Jet City Woman" and "Silent Lucidity" 18 billion times on the radio. Mindcrime is my favorite metal album of all time. I also like their eponymous album and "The Warning." I really must get "Operation: Livecrime" on DVD one of these days.

One that came to mind that I have not listened to in years is Alan Parsons Project. I always like progressive rock concept albums for road trips. :DR The album I remember liking for roadtrips east of Seattle through the high desert (usually to Idaho for skiing) was I Robot. I also liked Kansas music on that trip.

Best Swedish pop ever, but this is a "forgotten gem" thread not a band thread.
