View Full Version : My new Strat - Classic 50s Stratocaster

Finally made up my mind and decided on this one. I'd been playing it, along with several other Strats, for over a month at a local shop in town. I had considered a Classic 60s Strat and a Classic 60s Players Strat as well but everytime I picked this one up it just called out to me....plus I really did want a 50s style Stratocaster. I love this color.....

The pups are stock "Vintage Style Staggered Alnicos" from Fender. They sound pretty good. Very Jimi'ish I would say. First thing I did though was put a treble bleed on the volume pot and it helped clean up the range when you turn it down.

The color is beautiful in natural light. I didn't want to post flash pics of it but I couldn't wait. I'll work on some sounds this week Voo using the ZYS!

hahaha Speaking of reverb I maxed out the Classic 30 amph reverb and played a desert dweller's interpretation of "surf" just for the occasion. :)

Tusq nuts are cheap...$6.00. One will probably be installed in the near future but I don't feel an immediate need for one right now so no biggie.

My point exactly...so why not OEM? AND that $6 is retail!!!

One will probably be installed in the near future but I don't feel an immediate need for one right now so no biggie.

3 nuts later I still havent found anybody who can cut one of any value to me...and I dont believe Im being difficult either...so I feel no immediate wanton need to have one replaced either...I just think its a shame that your new beauty gets the same nut as my $100 Squier.

Actually I've seen the nuts they put on the Squier '51s and those REALLY look bad. They're also cut pretty badly too you can still see the frayed edges on some of them. For some reason I think they're a different kind of plastic than the ones Fender puts on their guitars because the Squier nuts are really white in appearance whereas the Fender nuts look ivory.

I agree in that Fender should at least put better nuts on their guitars but that cuts into their profit margin I guess. Not a big deal though for me. I've already installed 2 Tusq pre-cut nuts on my other Fenders and it was so cheap and easy to do.

I'm with you on this one. I understand trying to keep costs down but that seems a bit silly. FWIW, my Showmaster listed for $899 and came with a graphite nut. A poorly cut graphite nut, but graphite nonetheless.

Weird, I just watched Stranger Than Fiction with my wife & kids last night.

The main character (who plays the main character in a novel in the film) breaks out of his dull IRS personality & buys a strat which is that exact same color (or colour).

Midlife crisis Tone? ;) :D

Hey, Tone! Hope you are over your cold and are enjoying that thing. In honor of your purchase, my widgetcaster (http://www.dashboardwidgets.com/showcase/details.php?wid=586) that displays a strat on my computer dashboard is set the maple neck 50's strat. It is pool aquamarine instead of your seafoam, but it gives me the idea. Puts me in a sunny surfy stratty kind of mood on a nice sunny day here in Idaho. Cheers!

P.S., if you are not over that cold, you could start a band called Tone and the Phlegmpets or something like that. :p Always thought the phlegmpets might make a funny college band name.

You are a funny man sir. I'm feeling better and that new Strat is DA BOMB dude. I am one happy Stratocaster owner. I just told Robert why I love it so much. It's stock and it's right up there in terms of sound and ping with my modded out MIM Standard. But the best thing is....it's a 50s Strat how cool is that!

I have to correct a couple of you guys though...this is Surf Green...not Seafoam Green. Seafoam Green is darker. Surf is pale in comparison.

I thought that color was called Daphne blue?...My 50 players strat (mine was made in 99 and its starting to age though) Daphne blue...then again, im not the greatest at calling colors (ask my girlfriend). Could be the light in the pick or just could be my eyes.

www.myspace.com/evanisyourenemy

thats my classic players strat....I picked my up (before I modded the crap out of it) for 130 with the case from a friend that bought a guitar thinking she wanted to learn to play.

Either way tone...IMHO that guitar is the most bang for you fender buck!

Tone2TheBone
May 17th, 2007, 11:48 PM
LC - No, your guitar is Daphne Blue based on the pics I've seen. I think you might need to change your computer monitor color hues or something or maybe your monitor is going out. :) There is a definate color difference ask these guys.

I believe you...my eyes are horrible...and I viewed the pics on a laptop....after looking at them again I can deff tell yours is green...not to mention mine is almost 10 years old now and is starting to patina that yellow the finish does...

Seeing yours is making me GAS bad for another 50's strat!

Congrats, Tone, that's a gorgeous strat you've got there. I love surf music, and that is the perfect guitar for it. I've always wanted a strat that color, it's such a cool retro look (I didn't know that Fender had two colors of green that close together, interesting).
And that maple neck is making me drool....I used to have an El Cheapo Hondo strat with a maple neck, and I sure miss it now. The only maple-neck I have now is my Squier '51, and I've slowly come to the realization that I prefer playing on a maple neck.

Man, just looking at that guitar makes me want to play "Miserlou"!

Speaking of Miserlou I've taken a crash course in surf instrumental lately. I might have plucked Wipeout here and there throughout my lifetime jokingly but I never took Surf music seriously....until now! All week I've been playing Miserlou, Wipeout, Walk Don't Run, Pipeline et. al.! This 50s surf green guitar has THE surf vibe it's too fun! Yes the tinted maple neck with the soft V is to die for. Best neck Fender ever made. :DR

You saw Dick Dale? Dang that would be cool. My eyes are peeled on our local casino circuits for surf music. All we get usually are the old R&B groups.

Hey, Ray Davies was playing a mapled necked strat with a metallic surfy looking green on Austin City limits tonight. There was noise in our room and when he was playing the strat and I couldn't hear his playing all that well, but it sure looked cool up there. He was promoting his 06 solo album (must be a re-run). His voice is not what it was but he is still creative. Anyway, the retro surf looking strat looked good up there. Show is still on here. I hope he brings the strat back out.

EDIT: The strat is back on. A little deeper green depending on the light, and metallic as I said. White PG. Pretty guitar and vintage look. Sounds clean, warm and bright.
