Anybody here use(d) Musician's Friend strings? For a $1.99 per pack, how good can they be?

The MF customer reviews are pretty mediocre. A lot of comments about easy breakage and short play life. With D'Addario's or Ernie Ball's frequently on sale at $3 each in a 10-pack, I wouldn't take the chance....

I've used the 10's and they seem to be pretty good quality, last about average, maybe not quite as brite as some of the name brands but overall pretty good. Another cheap (inexpensive) string is the house brand at Music-go-Round they are $2.something and about the same quality...

I have heard and read that there are only 1 or 2 string manufactures and the rest is branding ??

Any thoughts on this ?

Dunno. But even in that scenario, you could be getting factory "seconds" or off-spec product. Tough to know, in any case....

That's what I was thinking DVM. These are probably QC rejects. I don't have much experience with strings, seeing as I'm still on my first set, which are D'Addario XLs, which I really like the sound of.

I've been using their Rogue bulk strings for 25 years and they are high quality. The packaged sets are not so good.

If you search the forum you should be able to find some of the posts and order information for the bulk sets. I've broken maybe 2 strings in all that time.

Thanks Spudman for the recommendation. When I use up my D'Addario, I'll try out the Rogue strings.
