Just got an idea... post some lines from a song, and we guess what song and artist it is.

You are not allowed to use search engines to look for the lines. Doing so will result in alien abduction with painful probing activities in certain body cavities, as well as mandatory front row seat participation (earplugs not allowed) at the next Britney Spears show.

Here we go!

"The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin'
That's what I said
The looser the waistband, the deeper the quicksand
Or so I have read"

Now, what song is that?

Don't cheat!

The person who gets it right continues with new song lines. Don't make it too obscure or I suspect the alien probing tools will come out. :D

Sounds HIP HOP to me. I do not listen to that kind of music. But then again, it could be some of that Heavy Metal, head banging stuff.

Hi Robert,

I seem to remember that one line from a Spinal Tap song. "Big Bottom", is that right? That was one hilarious movie.

This will stump all, and no putting up any other lyrics until somebody gets it. The strongest hint is in the lyrics:cool:

Who invented the slow burning fire
the unforgettable high
who put the moon and the stars in the skies
the kaleidoscope inside your eyes

Rising higher from the primal cries
like a spiral up to the moon
day by day this ambitious grind
search for a new state of mind

Restless species, all of Africa
running for water and food
flowers and trees & wild, wild weeds
colours and shapes of our tribes

The Truth will set you free
we will stand up to the lie
with this heart bigger than America
we will fight fire with fire
no more kiss will seal the lies

That's that "Hallelujah" song by Leonard Cohen. It seems to show up in every T.V. show or movie right after somebody blows their head off or something. I don't watch much T.V., but a couple of weeks ago it seems like every time I flipped through the channels, that song was on.

How about this:
"Well the bellhop is funky

If there's a knock at the door, boy, forget about it."

This may be obscure for some (not all)... but it's one of my all time favs.

First we'd climb a tree and maybe then we'd talk
Or sit silently and listen to our thoughts
With illusions of someday casting a golden light
No dress rehearsal, this is our life
That's when the hornet stung me and I had a feverish dream
With revenge and doubt tonight we smoke them out

A Magic Mama
And she could throw a mean Tarot
And carried on without a comma
That she was someone I should know

She had a snake for a pet
And an amulet
And she was breeding a dwarf

I told her she was awright

Oh once I was your treasure, and I saw your face in every star
But these promises we make at night, oh that's all they are

You came to me with lovin' kindness
But all my life I was a prisoner of my own blindness
I met you with indifference, and I don't know why

All my friends are married
Every Tom and Dick and Harry
You must be strong if you're to go it alone
Here's to the bachelors and the Bowery bums
Those who feel that they're the ones that are better off without a wife

It's how I got sleeping 'til the crack of noon
Midnight howling at the moon
Going out when I want to
Comin' home when I please
Don't have to ask permission
I want to go out fishin'
Never have to ask for the key

I never been no Valentino
But I had a girl who lived in Reno
Left me for a trumpet player but it didn't get me down
He was wanted for assault
Though he said it weren't his fault
Y'know the coppers rode him right out of town

It's how I got sleeping 'til the crack of noon
Midnight howling at the moon
Going out when I want to
Comin' home when I please
Don't have to ask permission
I want to go out fishin'
Never have to ask for the key

They say I'm kinda selfish about my privacy
Well as long as I can be with me we get along so well I can't even believe it
Love to chew the fat with folks
I'll be listening to all your dirty jokes
I'm so thankful for these friends I do receive

It's how I got sleeping 'til the crack of noon
Midnight howling at the moon
Going out when I want to
Comin' home when I please
Don't have to ask permission
I want to go out fishin'
Never have to ask for the key

Hey I got this girl I know
She been married several times
I don't want to end up like her
She been married so many times she got rice marks all over her face

Well done SuperSwede, and in fantastic time as well. For those of you who know, on the "Nighthawks at the Diner" album from which this song is from, the song is preceded by a lengthy and hilarious ad-lib type story by Waits about his lonely social life. They do it on camber sands
They do it at Waikiki
Lazing about the beach all day
At night the crickets creepy
Squinting faces at the sky
A Harold Robbins paperback
Surfers drop their boards and dry
And everybody wants a hat

Chorus:
But behind the Chalet
My holiday's complete
And I feel like William Tell
Maid Marion on her tiptoed feet
****** ******* **** *** *****

Shrinking in the sea so cold
Topless ladies look away
A he-man in a sunken shower
Shelters from the rain
You wish you had a motor boat
To pose around the harbor bar
And when the sun goes out to bed
You hook it up behind the car

Chorus:

Two fat ladies window shop
Something for the mantlepiece
In for bingo all the nines
A panda for sweet little niece
The coach drivers stand about
Looking at a local map
About the boy he's gone away
Down to the next door's caravan

Chorus:

Ok, here goes and will probably be quick.

I fear that I'm ordinary, just like everyone
To lie here and die among the sorrows
Adrift among the days
For everything I ever said
And everything I've ever done is gone and dead
As all things must surely have to end
And great lovers will one day have to part
I know that I am meant for this world
My life has been extraordinary
Blessed and cursed and won
Time heals but I'm forever broken

Ok, if it's me again, here we go. This one is almost too easy [in my opinion] but since nobody got the last one, I thought I'd keep it simple...

C'mon my friends let's make for the hills,
They say there's gold but I'm lookin' for thrills
You can get your hands on whatever we find
'Cause I'm only coming along for the ride

Well you go your way, I'll go mine
I don't care if we get there on time
Everybody's searchin' for something they say
I'll get my kicks on the way

Over the mountains, across the sea
Who knows what will be waiting for me
I could sail forever to strange sounding names
The faces of people whose places don't change

All I have to do is just close my eyes
See the seagulls wheeling in those far distant skies
All I wanna tell you, all I wanna say
Is count me on the journey don't expect me to stay

Well, that one definitely surprised me. The song is called "The Gold, It's In The..." and is from the album Obscured by Clouds. Anyone who loves David Gilmour, if you don't know this song you are cheating yourself out of a great solo!

For those of you who are not familiar with the album, It is the album preceding DSOTM. I think it is by far their most underrated album [enough so that nobody knew this song anyway]. The album shows the Floyd really focusing in on the sound that they developed in songs like Echoes and Embryo, which became templates for the Floyd sound of the 70's.

Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty,
Sound of their breath fades with the light.
I think about the loveless fascination,
Under the Milky Way tonight.

Lower the curtain down in Memphis,
Lower the curtain down all right.
I got no time for private consultation,
Under the Milky Way tonight.

Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.
Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.

And it's something quite peculiar,
Something that's shimmering and white.
Leads you here despite your destination,
Under the Milky Way tonight
(Chorus)
Under the Milky Way tonight.

correct.:AOK: I'm surprised you knew that one no one I know even knows who the church

My old roommate, the one whose band used to cover that song, listened to them like they were going out of style. I probably haven't thought of that song since about 1992. so thanks for the reminder!

Ok, so looks like I have the puck again... I know we have seen that there is a disparity between what I think should be easy and what actually winds up that way, but this one, well, I will be quite disappointed if nobody gets this one. Just a note, the lyrics to this one changed several times as the song was performed over the first few years it was performed, but these are essentially the lyrics from a version everyone SHOULD be familiar with.

--------------------------
I can't understand
She let go of my hand
And left me here facing the wall
Sure like to know
Where she did go
But I can't get close to her at all

While we kissed through the wild blazing nighttime
She said she would never forget
But morning is here
It's like I ain't here
She acts like we never have met

If I didn't have to guess
I'd gladly confess
To anything I might have tried
But I was with her too long
I've done something wrong
I wish she'd tell me what is I'd run and hide

Though her skirt it swayed, as the guitar played
Her mouth was watery and wet
I wish she'd unlock
Her voice once and talk
Instead of acting like we never have met

I'm leavin' today
I'll be on my way
On this I can't say very much
Well if you want me to
I can be just like you
And pretend that we never have touched

And if anybody asks me,
Is it easy to forget?
I'll say it's easily done
Just pick anyone
And pretend that you never have met
-------------

Anyone?

Too dangerous to keep.
Too feeble to let go.
And you want to bite the hand.
Should have stopped this long ago.
Go now, you've been set free.
Another month or so you'll be poisoning me
With your lovely smile.
I see you slither away with your skin and your tail,
Your flickering tongue and your rattling scales
Like a real reptile.
Had you coiled around my arm.
How could you ever know
How I loved your diamond eyes?
But that was long ago. (Chorus)
And I should have believed Eve.
She said we had to blow.
She was the apple of my eye.

Slow down this is slippin' trough my mind,
This conversation has run out of time.
Honey I know you know what I mean,
And that's the one thing that you soon will find.
I know that you really wanna go,
My mind is runnin' outta gas just relax,
And recap, and relapse.
Tonight, my bodies jumpin' and I,
Go through the motions and I'm leaving on this journey,
Maybe someday I'll come running home to you.

I don't wanna see the day, my words cannot make it safe.
(Come running home! Come running home!)
Her heart in my hands, it's too bad, no regrets...
I don't wanna see the day, her tears are falling on my grave.
(Come running home! Come running home!)
This is my one chance, to take back, no regrets...

Let's go! I just wanna let you know,
This situation leaves me outta breath.
We'll drive till the love that's in your eyes,
Drops to the ground and unravels like a thread...
I know that you really wanna go,
I only think about her, must get to her, cannot loser her.
You know that I will not let this die,
Life support systems and my mind on
Rewind and rewind and rewind...

The icy sky at night
Paddles cut the water
In a long and hurried flight
From the white man to the fields of green
And the homeland we've never seen.

They killed us in our tepee
And they cut our women down
They might have left some babies
Cryin' on the ground
But the firesticks and the wagons come
And the night falls on the setting sun.

They massacred the buffalo
Kitty corner from the bank
The taxis run across my feet
And my eyes have turned to blanks
In my little box at the top of the stairs
With my Indian rug and a pipe to share.

What some men will do here for gold
They're wounded but they just keep on climbin'

ok, so nobody knows "Diamonds & Gold" by Tom Waits from the classic "Rain Dogs" album. That's a shame. The track features some great guest guitar work from Keith Richards.

so, here is my last "guess the song" entry of 2007. another one i think is a bit of a slow pitch right over the plate but what the hell do i know? anyway, here goes... btw, this is one of my all-time fav songs and a HELL of a lot of fun to try to play...
------------------------
Please could you stop the noise, I'm trying to get some rest
From the all the unborn chicken voices in my head
What's that?
What's that?

When I am King you will be first against the wall
With your opinion which is of no consequence at all
What's that?
What's that?

Ambition makes you look pretty ugly
Kicking-squealing Gucci little piggy
You don't remember,
You don't remember
Why don't you remember my name?
Off with his head man,
Off with his head,
Why don't he remember my name?
I guess he does

Rain down, rain down
C'mon rain down on me
From a great height
From a great height

That's it sir
You're leaving
The crackle of pigskin
The dust and the screaming
The yuppies networking
The panic, the vomit
The panic, the vomit
God loves his children, God loves his children, yeah!

Well, no takers on that one so I am jumping back in. Here is one I hope is not too hard.

When success is equated with excess
The ambition for excess wrecks us
As top of the mind becomes the bottom line
When success is equated with excess

If your time ain't been nothing for money
I start to feel really bad for you, honey
Maybe honey, put your money where your mouth's been running
If your time ain't been nothing but money

I want out of this machine
It doesn't feel like freedom

This ain't my American dream
I want to live and die for bigger things
I'm tired of fighting for just me
This ain't my American dream

Bump..... its been a couple days so try this

When we were young our future was so bright
The old neighborhood was so alive
And every kid on the whole damn street
Was gonna make it big and not be beat

Now our neighborhood's cracked and torn
The kids are grown up but their lives are worn
How can one little street
Swallow so many lives

Chances blown
Nothing's free
Longing for what used to be
Still it's hard
Hard to see
Fragile lives, shattered dreams
(Whoa!)

Jamie had a chance, well she really did
Instead she dropped out and had a couple of kids
Mark still lives at home cause he's got no job
He just plays guitar and smokes a lot of pot

Jay committed suicide
Brandon OD'd and died
What the hell is going on
The cruelest dream, reality

Chances blown
Nothing's free
Longing for what used to be
Still it's hard
Hard to see
Fragile lives, shattered dreams

Chances blown
Nothing's free
Longing for what used to be
Still it's hard
Hard to see
