View Full Version : Neck for my Deluxe Players Strat

I'm not saying I need a new neck. I like the neck on my Strat. However, I am toying with the idea of getting a different kind of neck.

Initially I had though of getting another Strat with a different neck, but that will cost me. Instead, maybe I should just a buy a good neck on eBay or something and slap it on my existing Strat?

I am not quite certain which kind of neck I really want. I like the Telecaster necks, they are fast and slim. I like this 12" radius neck I have, but it's a bit hard to play faster stuff on (although maybe that is good so I can slow down :p ).

I will go and try different some different types of Strats in a store and make note what kind of neck and neck radius is on each.

So with all that rambling, what are some good options for buying necks? Bloozcat mentioned Mighty Mite, and there's Warmoth.

I am looking for a quality neck with medium or medium-jumbo frets. I like quite big frets - makes it easier to bend. Maple fretboard preferred but rosewood would work too. I am not looking for the cheapest decent neck - I'd rather pay more and get a really good one.

Well, I have yet to feel alot of necks.. but different types.. none of great quality for sure... except the last one I try to play on all the time.. Maple soft V Jimmie Vaughan neck... it just feels right "to me" at this point.. usually available on the e-bay.. my 2cents..

Neck 1-Piece Maple, Soft "V" Shape,
(Satin Polyurethane Finish) Fingerboard Maple, 9.5” Radius (241mm) No. of Frets 21 Medium Jumbo Frets

I really like that neck on my guitar, one of the best features in my opinion. But I wasn't sure if that was the kind of radius you were looking for. I was pretty sure Tone would bring it up. I think it fits the bill otherwise. Take a road trip on down here and you can check out the fires and try it out on my guitar! :DR

I'll make you a deal: I'll sell you my Squier '51 neck for 1/10th that. Since it's a '51, it must've been made about 1951. I'll even pay for shipping.

Robert you may have to square off the pickguard at the heel.
with a '51 neck. I do love those '51 necks.

He's asking about my MIM neck.

Don't know. Take some measurements and email them to me at yahoo. I'll check mine. Get me measurements of your heel cavity on the body and the actual neck and all the measurements on can on the hole locations. I'm on holiday now so email me at yahooski.

I should probably try a neck with 7.25 radius too, since I've never played one of those.

Robert, why don't you buy an All Parts neck?

Elavd, I am looking for info and input from you guys, I don't know that much about necks. Plus, Tone2theBone tells me I have to buy his. :)

Ι think that the All part necks combine: quality, combatibility with Fender bodies, and good prices.
I think that you should choose a C-shaped Rosewood (or maple if this is your preferance) neck with 9.5" radius and 21 medium jumbo frets.

Also if you're interested to Fender necks only, I have read MANY possitive reviews about the Jimmie Vaughan maple neck. You probably will find a used one on ebay.

Finally, you can check the ebay store named "stratosphere". It has many original Fender necks in mint condition ;)

For me, the two strats to look at were mine and the JV. Since your experience and Lev's, and Elavd's, the deluxe and classic player's seem awesome too. For the necks, I looked really quick at the difference between the JV and mine (same as the one Tone is selling) and the main difference is mine is a Modern C shape and the JV is a V shape. I know Pete (StingX) loves his as does Justaguy. Seems like a trip down to a guitar store to try a JV or try to find one of mine might be in order. Here is a comment that caught my eye when I was looking at the ZZounds sight for specs on the 60th ann neck vs. the JV: (it comes from a user review of the 60th)

Value:
Best value for the dollar. It's like a Jimmie Vaughan Strat, with a modern C shaped neck.

Necks seem so personal, it seems you should try before you buy at the store and go with what fits. If you like the 60th, it seems Tone's would be a natural fit and would look great on that guitar. That allparts neck that Elavd posted pics of too looks great also, I just don't know how you would try one first and that is the way I would choose.

You guys are lucky that I package the things I sell sooo good. I've seen people walk into the Post Office with huge boxes wanting to ship with only one piece of tape holding everything together. :thwap: :nono: This neck is so pretty I almost welched on the sale. Genuine Fender maple neck in mint condition! Only the best for my friends. :AOK:

He does package things well. That DiMarzio humbucker he sent me was super padded. I hope you enjoy that neck Robert! Even if you don't end up wanting it on your blue guitar, and I bet you will, it will really dress up one of your others.

Hey Robert, get Gotoh Vintage Staggered tuners. That way you can do away with the string trees (which just cause tuning problems).

Here is a link:

(no affiliation, they were just helpful when I bought some things from them. You should find the tuners on ebay as well :AOK: )

Robert, please do yourself a favor and buy also a steel block for your Strat.

Yoy will be AMAZED by the sonic change of your guitar ;)

(I once had the Deluxe Player strat, and when I changed the block, suddenly the guitar become alive!!! ;)

I don't know - Tone, can you answer this?

It has a steel block already, doesn't it? That's what I've been reading.

This should be interesting once I get it going. I just hope I will fall in love with that neck! :pancake

I know that if you put vintage tuners on an MIM Standard neck you'll need bushings. You'll also have to make new screw holes on the headstock for the tuner backs. If you're going to want to try vintage tuners just use the ones off of your rosewood neck. They're already gold. You'll need the bushings though as we stated. You can check to see if you can make new alignment holes for the tuners if you put your current ones on just to see where the holes would be placed. Remember that the MIM Standards have those 2 holes at the top of each hole for the tuners that come stock on those necks. If you use vintage tuners you'll have to find out if those existing hole's won't interfere with the new holes you'll have to make. They probably won't interfere but I've never checked myself.

Steve - This neck isn't tinted like your Anniversary. It's maple white with a very light coat of poly that's it. It's very pale.

I don't think so... Where have you read it?

It is not written on the specs of the official site (http://www.fender.com/products/view_specs.php?full_partno=0133000&name=Deluxe+Players+Strat%26reg%3B).

I read somewhere that all new MIM strats have a bigger improved steel block. I could be wrong though, my memory isn't so good any more due to old age and loud amps.

I want to make this "tuning process" :) simple - I don't want to mess around with this neck. Soooo, how about these tuners then?

Here is a link to the discussion of the larger block introduced in 2006, and like in my guitar. I do not see where it says if it is steel or not. The discussion is mid way down.,

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document/fender/new_standard_series?doc_id=100268

I saw a similar discussion in a Fender catalog from that year that I have at home.

Those tuners look nice too! I don't know anything about the technical aspects though.

Robert, try to stick a little magnet (like the ones on your refrigerator) on your block.

If it sticks, it's steel...

So simple ;)

Don't know yet - are there any locking tuners that would fit?

Tone2TheBone
September 20th, 2007, 02:21 PM
Yeah remember those stock Fender Shallers that go with that neck....they make some that are locking.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Schaller-Locking-Tuners?sku=361333

Notice the 2 dimples coming out of the tuners. Those are alignment dimples that go into the holes in the headstock. Perfect fit.

Finally, I got some tuners. I eBay'ed myself some used Fender tuners off a Highway 1 Strat. They just arrived. We are getting closer... :D
