So on Saturday night my "side band" Hoyt and the Hotheads played as part of the local Gainesville Summer Music Showcase, a/k/a "Moefest." We had the middle slot between an acoustic solo and a jammy-type band in a very very small room in a weirdish venue that has a convenience-type store/bar in the downstairs and a music store upstairs.

Since the bar serves no draft beverages you can buy beers and such to drink there, or buy as if it were a package store (I think our Limey brethren call it an "off-license") and take your beer home (obviously you can't take beer off the premises once it's been opened). People who chose to drink there can drink out on the front porch (which frequently has people playing acoustics and singing), in the band room in the back, or out on a fenced-in back patio area.

Anyhow, this was the debut of the Hotheads as a 5-piece with a new second lead guitarist. This guy is very good, teaches guitar locally and went to Berklee. A bit shy and retiring onstage, but I make up for my relative lack of technical ability by bringing the showmanship aspect, so it's a good fit. The thought behind having a 5-piece is really more to keep us from having to play as only a trio if our bassist (who's in another band and often has schedule conflicts) can't make a show, in which case I cover bass.

The show went fine and afterward I went over to another Moefest venue to catch another local band, Black Snake, that now has two former Crash Pad members as its rhythm section. In addition to seeing the show and saying hi to a bunch of people I know, I ran into a friend who, like myself, had lent a bunch of memorabilia to a local filmmaker who is doing (or at least was planning) a documentary on the birth of the Gainesville punk rock/alternative scene, and she had talked to the filmmaker (his band was playing also) about getting our stuff back-- which would be nice since he's probably had it for over a year now.

So all in all a good night. Also I managed to get through the set and all my traipsing about despite having been diagnosed and gone on meds the same day for a viral nerve infection (shingles) which fortunately was caught early and hasn't gotten too bad in the days since.

As always, your comments on my poseritude are encouraged, and all questions gladly answered. Saturday was the gig debut of Corinne, my $100 pawnshop prize, the Brownsville Choirboy, which performed admirably. (Its true color is the darker violet rather than then the light pink seen in the first photo.)

OK. You asked for it.

You're working and I'm not. There. Proud of yourself? :p

I'm totally envious...and a bit proud...baboo.:D

Brian, glad to see you are right back out there on stage. I personally like the 6th photo down best, kinda a "Buddy Holly's been hangin' at the gym, has a soul patch and is crankin" sort of shot. I bet your shows are energetic. It would be fun to see one.

Oh, and as a fellow lawyer, I am a bit envious too. :DR

Haha, man I WISH I'd been to the gym! I'm in serious need of some pound-droppin.

But I do always try to be energetic onstage. It doesn't take much usually. Saturday I was dragging a bit because the drummer was in a pissy mood and I was on meds after a long day, but I try to leave all that behind for the 40 or so minutes I'm onstage. All too often musicians forget they're stage performers-- a subset of actors.

Or at least that's my take on things.

Awesome once again KP! Who takes your pix? I took my camera to our last gig, but was too busy playing to get any action shots. Didn't really know anyone in the crowd to ask them either... :( Next time. Don't know if I can live up to your poseritute, but you are an inspiration to us younger folk :DR

Haha, thanks. The camera just gets passed to anyone handy. I use a disposible camera just in case it gets lost or something, but I've never had one go missing (though I have had people manage to mess up a whole roll of film and have no pics as a result-- still not sure how that happened). I'm not sure who took those, frankly. I think probably the drummer's girlfriend, but I couldn't swear to that.

Looks like you had a great time, I love the venue location and we have a similiar one in my area, but they serve booze, Canada is funny with who sells what to whom. Glad to see lots of pictures far to many time a band has a really great show and no memories of it, minus the ringing in the ears.

Keep those photos coming that are amazing !!

Man, watch your belly when playing behind the neck - you have to turn away from the audience the next time! :)

Just kidding Krash!

I love your pictures, always good to see how passionate you do your music.

Yeah, I figure, some day I won't be playing any more. Who's gonna believe some old coot was actually a rocker? Haha, I'll need proof!

Actually my practice of taking pictures at almost all shows started early on, and isn't simply because I'm an egomaniac (which I may well be, but that's neither here nor there, haha!). By good fortune I have some photos of my very first public performance, and found that, as to other shows where I didn't get pics, they all tended to run together in my recollection. Having photos helps jog the memory!

Haha, no, you're right about the belly. But even when I was 10 pounds lighter it still looked kinda bad, because you have to arch your back to play like that!
