The ear-to-ear grins on the ice have been less frequent for Mats Sundin recently, but the mug of the Toronto Maple Leafs' captain was absolutely beaming last night.

Sundin became the Leafs' top career goal scorer and points leader in an 8-1 victory over the New York Islanders. The historic outing arrived 48 hours after the Leafs were thoroughly embarrassed 7-1 at home by the Carolina Hurricanes.

When the cameras found Sundin on the bench, moments after his fluky, but historic goal, which was a pass meant for linemate Jason Blake but bounded off the skate of New York defenceman Brendan Witt at 9:54 of the third period, the big Swede was in his element.

He smiled, let out a few whoops and waved to the crowd in a most appreciative manner.

Ahh, Sundin is great! Good to hear at least something is going the Maple Leaf way...
