Lo Input/Hi Input

For fretters with amps with a hi & a lo input. When do you use one vs the other?


I'm exploring both inputs of my Fender Champion 600.

Maybe low for single coils and high for 'buckers ?

Yeah, but it could just as easily be t'other way 'round to balance things out.

On my Marshall JMP50 I mostly use the low input. That means that the amp, in spite of where the PRE knob is positioned, stays pretty clean sounding. I turn up the PRE and MASTER to get good power saturation then add pedals for the grit as I see fit.

Yeah, I had been mostly using the low input, but I've been liking the hi one lately (I've lowered the gain by swapping out the 12AX7 with a 5751).

I use pedals to control saturation & am as likely to dime the amp & set the level on the pedals *below* unity as anything else.

It varies from amp to amp. On a Peavey Bandit I used to have, they recommended always using the high output, except for guitars with extremely hot or active pickups, then they would recommend the low input. With my stock strats, the high input always worked alot better on the Bandit.

Some of the Fender amps would recommend the same...high input for most guitars except for those with active pickups.

I guess it varies from one amp to another, or according to personal taste.

Thanks TS808! Yeah, I thought that maybe the high output was normally for single coils.

from what I read, most folx like the low input on the Champion 600 (with the vol on about 7) better than the Hi.

The way I use it I like both depending on what tone I am looking for.

Try a 12AT7 (60% gain). I bought a set of JJ (12AT7 and EL84) for my vj combo. I have an RCA 5751, Sovtek 12AX7 and a Fender 12AX7 hi-gain also but I keep on putting the 12AT7 in and this time it just stayed in. :)

This is how my Sovtek Mig 50H is. The low input is more clean, the high is more highgain and gets dirty much faster.

The 12AU7 is really low gain, something like 19%. 12AT7 is 60% while 5751 is 70%.
