Has anybody done research on or implemented any alternative energy methods in their home?

I want to find out about solar and wind power for my home to help with heating and energy costs. I don't have any idea where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

I´m thinking about investing in an air source to water pump. It takes heat out of the air and uses that to heat the house and water.
