I dropped by a local butcher and picked up a piece of beef femur to try making my own bone blanks. A guy I know who knows a craftsman who works with bone says he uses a fairly extensive cleaning and curing process to prepare it for carving. I looked a bit on line and had little luck. As there is still some gristle and meat left which according to the butcher is very hard to remove, I would like to go about it the right way to avoid wasting time, energy and material. Does anybody know how to cure/prepare it for lutherie use? Any links or info greatly appreciated.
