I dropped by a local butcher and picked up a piece of beef femur to try making my own bone blanks. A guy I know who knows a craftsman who works with bone says he uses a fairly extensive cleaning and curing process to prepare it for carving. I looked a bit on line and had little luck. As there is still some gristle and meat left which according to the butcher is very hard to remove, I would like to go about it the right way to avoid wasting time, energy and material. Does anybody know how to cure/prepare it for lutherie use? Any links or info greatly appreciated.

While I haven't personally gone through the process navvid, a friend who has basically says you boil the crap out of the thing until the last vestige of fat is gone. The same friend has told me that he prefers to use dog chew bones from the pet store. Hope that helps a little.
