Thanks. The smiling kid is my son Jack. The bored ones are my daughter Hannah and Jack's friend. They were all pretty tired, we'd just come back from a long walk out onto Paynes' Prairie, a large wetland area south of Gainesville that had once been a lake. We saw a ton of gators, and a few bison and some sandhill cranes.

Haha, thanks. I had broken my prescription ones I put clip-ons on, and had bought those to cannibalize a stem from, but I couldn't get the dang thing apart. So I just ended up wearing them that day. It was really bright out on the prairie.

Actually, that is a small 4 drawer dresser the bh is sitting on. Next to it is an AD30VT that I added an in/out connection on the side. I run the bh to the "in" and use it as a cab. When I want to use the AD30VT, I connect a jumper cable to the in/out and use it as it was designed.

I installed a rajun cajun speaker and it works out real well.

Hi I realize that I'm way late to this thread (as usual :-) but here is a picture of myself taken at a recent gig. I just started playing in this band that does a combination of surf music, oldies from the 50s-60s, and whole Beach Boys show. We all have to sing lots of harmonies in the group so it's challenge just remembering all of the various singing parts for each tune. The guitar playing has been a blast, learning some of the old Ventures tunes, cranking up the reverb, etc. It's a lot of fun so far and the other guys in the band are really great players.

Here's a couple from the week before Christmas. I don't think I've mentioned it here, but my left hand/fingers had mild to moderate nerve damage, and felt numb 24/7. Physical therapy + chiropractic wasn't helping. My playing was suffering (bad)....... After 6 mos. of treatment and no improvement, I had cubital tunnel release surgery.

Looks worse than it actually was, Sumi. Plus the arm was wrapped for 9 days so it wrinkled and felt weird. Got the staples out now, went back for a checkup, Doc said A-OK, now get back to playing the guitar. I've got some feeling back in the hand, so that's a good thing.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, Steve, those videos were done the week before.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't worry about how things would turn out, but I had a good surgeon, several tests to be sure it was necessary, and I followed doctor's orders to the letter. Phew!
Plus the doctors (more than one) said the condition was almost certain to get worse w/o surgery, but with a good chance of some improvement if I had the operation and didn't wait too long.

Haha, no worries, I thought that might be the case, but sometimes it's hard to pick up on stuff like that online.

Is she interested in your guitars?

My daughter is 16 and now plays bass with me every Sunday in church. With only a little help from me, she basically taught herself to play my basses and now has one of her own.

Still a little early for my 12-y.o. son though, says he wants to learn guitar but not mature enough to be self-motivated yet.

Haha, outstanding.

I've found that encouraging but not pressuring is the way to go. It's a bit frustrating for me with my son since I know he could be learning if he were more motivated, but he has to learn to be self-motivated for it to work.

My Hannah got her own bass for her 16th birthday, and has a loaner bass amp in her room. Jack has been promised his choice of a couple of my cheapies if and when he learns, and has one of them and a loaner amp in his room too.

Ah, that's just me adjusting to my aging process. Lap 47 around the Sun is a few weeks away, and I'm finally starting to feel and look my age. You can cheat it for only so long! If I can get my arse back in shape a little, I'll be fine.

Yeah, Doug, I hear ya on that one. I just turned 45 a couple months ago, and the vintage years are beginning. I think my Portrait of Dorian Grey years are coming to an end. That said, I agree that you don't look 47.

Still, re-dedicating to good training, and getting out on the bike using 40 something standards and not 20 something standards has been good. Tig, you would fit right in with my bike group. Wish you (or anyone else that wanted to) could swing by and join us on a ride. BTW, Tig for tig welded, or for your bouncy qualities and springy tail?

I could definitely benefit from getting back on my bike. I haven't even aired up the tires in almost a year. Of course, I don't do much road riding. It's mostly off-road for me. Or was.

I should at least get some rollers, and workout in the garage until I'm in good enough shape to not embarrass myself in public.

"Tig" was a name from some chat site long ago. More the bouncy tail kind.

Some of the 40-50 somethings I ride with are scary fast! One guy is pushing 60, and he still keeps up with the 20 cat 1-2 guys. Good genetics, I guess. He was the jr champion of England and won the Milk Race back in his day.

Me, I'm a sprinter in a climber's body! A race with a short, steep hill finish was the prime hunting grounds for me. Think Paulo Bettini, but with half the ability! The last 3 years of XC racing, I raced only in the open single sport class. The 20 somethings would hand me a terrible thrashing! I'm a glutton for punishment.

I remember the year of turning 43. It was a sudden and unexpected drop...
like when you leaning back in a chair and you suddenly feel it tip backwards a moment before regaining balance!

Now, I kick myself when I forget to bring reading glasses to read a restaurant menu! But, the alternative to aging isn't so pleasant, so I should HTFU and keep on keepin' on. :pancake

PS, you look great. Brian, that cracks me up. I saw Mojey Wogey and Skid live once back at the end of the '80s or in the first of the '90's in Seattle. Used to love that stuff! I guess I still do. I always play his Christmas disc during the season, though not around the kids.

This was my favorite, which came out while I was in law school, and idealistic and all that stuff. In today's world of many folks having to give UA's to keep a job or to play high school sports, it seems almost naive.

I can't find any threads from back then. Let's just say the quality of this Reverend is really up there. The neck shape, frets, hardware, electronics... all much better than the price range usually carries. It is very easy to play.

It plays better than any guitar I've ever owned. The classic wound P-90's are hot and full of roar when you need them, or clear and jazzy when rolled back. The bass contour pot is a big part of that range. Rolled on, the guitar starts to have a humbucker edge to it. It makes the guitar get mean. Roll off the bass contour and she sings like an angel. You still have a standard tone pot, which tapers nicely without affecting the volume.

The only nit's would be the single coil hum (part of the character, too), the body size is a bit big (I like Unknown Hinson's artist model's smaller size), and the uncarved flatness of the body. Otherwise, it is a pure magical instrument.

I'm playing my Ibanez AF125 Custom hollow body, a real nice guitar:

I called my son today, he's living in Harrisburg working at The Gingerbread Man, and told him he did a beautiful job with that picture. He appreciated that feedback. If you go there, look him up. His name is Clint. He's a waiter there. He told me today he may be getting back into a band. He's very musically talented and a great singer. He took piano lessons from when he was seven up until he was about sixteen. He is good on the keyboards but plays bass as his specialty. I gave him my old MIJ Fender Standard J Bass, a now aged white one - kind of yellow now. It is about a 1988 model. I also bought him a new SWR Workingpro 15 amp a few years ago and that is one awesome bass combo amp. He recently gave me back my old Peavey about 1988 TNT 150 with the Black Widow speaker. I haven't plugged it in yet - I'm afraid to. They used it for everything, vocals, etc. If it still works good it will be my best bass amp. Right now I'm using my Fender Rumble 100 that I bought after I gave him my good stuff. I also picked up a new red Affinity J bass and had Fender Vintage Noiseless J bass pickups installed professionally in it with a treble bleed circuit. Although it is a Squier Affinity, it is a really good sounding and playing bass. I have a Schecter five string stilleto elite, though, that sounds super great. It's got an active preamp and I have come to love that bass "B" string's tones. I have a cool Ibanez SR500 four string that is really awesome and ergonomic that I am going to put flats on. It is cool now but the elixer strings are rippingly bright, which can be fun, but I want to go for the more mellow vibe.

Thanks for the compliment on the picture; more for my son than out of vanity. He did a definitely good job and I feel honored. He does cd cover art as well, some of which is realy awesome. You might want to check out his facebook site - Clinton Bolduc, and look for the link to his Kingdom Come Photography & Design link. He has some of his graphic design and cd art work there.

Hah! How many times do you go for air time during your sets, Brian? Do you try for some height every song?

This makes a nice pairing with the "Can Spud Webb still dunk?" article I read earlier. Chalk up another victory over gravity for the old guys!

Nah, not every song, I'd be too out of breath to sing! Probably 3 or 4 times a 10-12 song set, if that. Mainly at big song kick-ins or outros.

It was cool. We're definitely not "big time". I actually only met Charles Kelly from Lady Antebellum (a band I don't care for). Hillary was incredibly pregnant and not socializing at all. Their band was really tight and a bunch of gear heads. Of course, we played that show, then played at some dirty bar for 20 people the following night. That definitely puts your ego back in check.

Ahh, the reality of living in an age where seemingly many people mainly listen to music on a computer, and go out to clubs just to hear recordings.

I'm not a fan of Lady Antebellum either (even putting aside the cringingly bad band name choice, haha!), but still it's a resume' line!

That does look like fun. I wish we could play places like that -- most of our time is spent in muddy bars with dim lighting.

It was fun. I'll post some pics of the McLaren F1 and the '62 Aston Martin that were in front of us.

That pic of your band playing the bar looks like a lot of fun too though.

Ideally, we'd play a lot of outdoor festivals and park concerts as those pay well and would be fun.

I don't play to make money, but I don't know if that's necessarily always true. I typically make way more money playing at bars than I do at festivals. Maybe I just need to find better festivals.

recently got paid to perform music for the first time. Sung harmonies for a CD release event. "Crumbs off the Table". It's on CD baby I think. And there's a facebook page.

from that gig...

our fearless leader Andrea....plays an Eastman semi'hollow through an Ampeg Jet.

Yeah, we've played a bunch of outdoor gigs, but ours have tended to be freebies more than our bar gigs (we've done a Labor Day Fest downtown, a get-out-the-vote downtown, a big private outdoor post-Halloween gig out on a private property, and the church band has done a few freebies downtown with a bunch of other church bands).

Our bar gigs are one set of originals on a three or 4 band bill, so we don't really make anything that way either. Enough to make up some stickers for the next show, haha. Oh, and the place we play most often, we get a $20 or so band tab.

I have played many dozens of paying gigs but only maybe 5-6 where we actually made something after gas and everything...especially after-gig beers etc :-) well those we often got on the house pretty well. But still. Recently, I've done session gigs some, maybe two dozen songs, and gotten paid 50 euros per song I sing, so I've probably made much more actual profit recording vocals for other bands than from performing on stage. It has been great in that I have been able to buy/pay for some stuff in my studio. Hell I guess I paid for the entire studio build already with those session tracks :-)

I hear you, Deeaa. For me the smaller gigs pay more. The picture I posted above was from a festival with Blackberry Smoke, Willie Nelson, Lady Antebellum, and a ton of other modern country bands. We got to play the main stage to probably ~5000 people, but didn't get a dime for it. They considered exposure a form of payment. Next time, I'll expose something to them.

Well, I very much prefer to play for some money since I drive a 4x4 truck that eats loads of gas. The "festivals" that I'm referring to are things like the Bite of Seattle food festival and other similar events which pay fairly well. Playing a large music festival as a small band probably wouldn't pay much, if anything. Unfortunately, since we play instrumental jazz and pop, the bar market isn't so good for a band like ours.
