Wilco - Nels Cline

Watching Austin City Limits on PBS tonight. Wilco is on, with lead guitarist Nels Cline. He is playing some pretty sweet leads and licks, then sometimes getis into this buzzsaw thing where he speed picks his jazzmaster in some sort of frenzy. His leads and melodies are really great. The buzzsaw thing I am still getting used to. Jeff Tweedy, the singer and a rhythm player, has a nice voice and plays rhythm nicely. They have a bunch of guitars up there sometimes with the other guys in the band. Haven't really paid attention to these guys before. Anyone else watched these guys?

I don't particuarly care for Wilco personally, but I have listened to Nels Cline for years. He definitely brings a new and intersting element to any band.

If you are looking for more Nels Cline I highly reccomend:

(a) his solo projects under the name "The Nels Cline Singers." Don't let the title fool you, there are no singers, just a whole lot of innovative and enjoyable guitar playing.

(b) his work with jazz/punk band Banyan [featuring Nels and former Minutemen bass player Mike Watt]

Thanks guys for the links. Some of the Wilco band stuff I liked, but some stuff didn't do it for me. A lot of Nels Cline's playing was very interesting though. I will check his solo stuff out for sure. As you may recall, I like both jazz and punk, so I will need to check out that jazz/punk band at least!

Steve, I think Banyan may be very appealing to you. Both Watt and Cline are amazing players who have a lot of knowledge of both jazz and punk genres of music [as well as about any other style you can name for Cline]. Also, if I'm not mistaken the drummer for the project was with a couple of Perry Farrell led bands [Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros], and I enjoy his playing on this stuff. I have their first album which is self-titled as well as a live album called "Live at Perkins Place." Both are very good. I think they have at least one more studio album that I don't have.

As for the Nels Cline Singers stuff, I have both "Instrumentals" and "The Giant Pin" and both are excellent cd's which really show off how amazing a guitar player Nels is [plus the drummer for this project, Scott Amendola, is awesome]. He released another album from this project this year but I haven't gotten it yet.

He's done some other projects that are also worth looking into, but these two are a good intro to his unique approach.
