I spent a few years as the house guitarist at a huge Mega Church here in Birmingham. It was quite a rush playing for 4000 + SCREAMING folks every Sunday morning!! I had to take a break as the stage volume levels were running above 120 Db and I allmost went DEAF. I was using a full Fender Prosonic halfstack as my on stage monotor and micing.
Thought I would share a couple of live clips all the electric work is mine.

Did you try molded ear-canal headphones? That should have fixed the decibel problem for you.

I tried to use several over the counter types of plugs but could not hear well enough with them to follow the flow. That particular enviorment was BRUTAL on the volume as the drummer had a bass amp and a a 1/18 sub running behind his electronic set on stage!! It was just crazy loud!! For a while I was running an early Hot Rod mod version of the Carvin X100B 100 watt head and had it running over 5 to keep up with the stage volumes and my Marshall TSL 60 had prolems keeping up. Now keep in mind it was a 10,000 seat hall with a HUGE stage.
Here is a photo from stage looking out

I do need to get a set of molded plugs as I still do a lot of stuff with a loose knit group of guys. We play in a lot of small churchs where volume is a real prblem and it's mostly off the cuff flowing improve stuff where we will find a cool prgression and just flow out of it for long periods of time. Ya can't follow what ya can't hear ya know ;) .

I don't mean earplugs, but rather in canal headphones. You can get some absolutely stellar ones & control the mix to your headphones. Some acts use them for the added clarity of the mix rather than noise levels.
