Weather Report is one of my favorite bands of all time, with my favorite bass player of all time - Jaco Pastorius!

Take a look at a master at work in Portrait of Tracy. :master:

Then check out The Chicken with some sizzling horns. Can this man create a groove or WHAT?

That was great Robert! I really liked Weather Report back in the day, but forgot about them a little. Thanks for the excellent post!

Jaco was only 35 when he died. He was beaten to death in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

His influence on modern bass players cannot be overestimated.

I'm still mad he had go that way! RIP, Jaco.

No doubt that Jaco is another tremendous player who left WAY too early. Thanks for the video Robert!

His sons are taking up where he left off with the Bendy Pastorius group. Although, when I saw them for the Jaco birthday concert, his son Felix was on the drums but his other son Julius (which Im told hes every bit the bass player his father was) was in NY.

That book seems to be criticized for inaccuracies. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaco_Pastorius and Jaco's wife comments here - http://www.jacop.net/book.html

I will freely admit that I'm not the biggest Jaco connoisseur on the planet, but from what I've heard of him, I've always preferred to listen to him in the context of a song. He can really lay down a groove. The solos (like the first video) that I've heard tend to strike me as being semi-random noodling. Granted, it's talented noodling, but noodling nonetheless.

Having said that, beyond the occasional bout with Pat Methany, I'm not the biggest fan of modern Jazz.

Yeah, I cannot speak to accuracy/inaccuracy. Nor can I speak to the credibility of the author. Just found it to be an interesting/entertaining read.

Yes, I bet it's a good read anyway, Milkowski is a pretty good writer.
