View Full Version : The lyrics thread!

Since tot_Ou_tard asked me to start a lyrics thread, this is one. These will be lyrics from the bands I'm in, and feel free to post lyrics from songs you've written or original music from bands you've been in. :AOK:

Here are some of the lyrics from some of the songs we play in the band Hoyt and the Hotheads (a thread about which is where tot_Ou_tard asked about lyrics), written by our singer and my longtime friend and colleague Hoyt Walston (BMI):

THE FUNDAMENTALIST SONG
(Recorded on HotHeads’ “Kill the Pain” CD)

Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Why can’t fundamentalists ever have fun?

Well I went down to the dance club one Saturday night.
I was hoping to find some sweet young thing to maybe treat me right.
But before I could get myself inside, this preacher barred the door
and said “ya’ ain’t allowed to come in here anymore.”
He said “dancing is against the word of our Heavenly Lord,
and I know you know that this is true ‘cause I’ve told you many times before.
It’s long past time that we shut down this den of sin and sorrow,
and I’ll see you all in church tomorrow.”

Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Why can’t fundamentalists ever have fun?

Fundamentalists don’t believe in smoking or drinking or sex.
No wonder they’re always so uptight. A bunch of nervous wrecks.
And people eating lobsters has no place in God’s grand Creation.
It’s not just a sin, its an Abomination!

Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Why can’t fundamentalists ever have fun?

Fundamentalists around the world are the same, near and far.
Jerry Falwell. Pat Robertson. Mullah Omar.
It’s not enough for them to follow their restrictive rules themselves.
They’ve gotta try to impose ‘em on everyone else.
Fundamentalists think life on earth is just a vale of tears.
They follow rigid rules of conduct handed down for many years.
But what gives them the right to tell other people what to do?
I’ve got a problem with that. What about you?

Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Who took the fun out of fundamentalism?
Why can’t fundamentalists ever have fun?

KILL THE PAIN
(a/k/a The Lobotomy Song)
(Recorded on HotHeads’ “Kill the Pain” CD)

We’re stuck on this world all alone.
And like a dog in search of a bone,
we struggle hard all our lives to get by.
And when the time has come to go,
it seems we’ve got little there to show for it.
It’s enough to make you break down and cry.
But I couldn’t tell you
what I was thinking about
when I saw my girl with another guy.

I need a bottle in front of me
or a frontal lobotomy.
I need me some therapy
to help me kill this pain.
I won’t go back again.
I can’t hear a word you’re saying
(La-La-La-La-La-La).
I won’t play the game you’re playing.

We once thought that we could change the world.
Make life better for every boy and girl.
But from the beginning we never had a chance.
Cause life’s not as easy as it seems.
Things rarely turn out like in our dreams.
Cinderella never gets invited to the dance.
But I couldn’t tell you
what I was thinking about
when I saw my dreams lie in shattered ruins.

I need a bottle in front of me.
Or a frontal lobotomy.
I need me some therapy
to help me kill this pain.
I won’t go back again.
I can’t hear a word you’re saying
(La-La-La-La-La-La).
I won’t play the game you’re playing.
(La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La- La)

Feel free to post comments, positive or negative. Btw, re the first song, I should note that Hoyt is actually an ordained minister in a sort of non-denominational church, and I'm a longtime Protestant churchgoer, so the intent is not to criticise religion in general, just those who want to impose their religion on others. It is meant in the spirit of fun, and is usually a big hit as a sing-along type number in our live sets.

Here are a couple songs I wrote.

This first one is one of my more serious ones. It's about a friend and former bandmate who died in a plane crash last year.

Stevo
by Brian Krashpad

Farewell old friend I wish I'd got to say goodbye
This ain't the end I'll see you in the by-and-by

I'll hear your drum beats pounding
Like a thousand beating hearts
As your cymbals crash like thunder
and that's just for a start
We'll crank the amplifiers
and begin another song
We'll rock until the daylight
We'll be young and free and strong

Good-bye my man I'll see you on the other side
I know I can Make it there if I only try

I'll hear your drum beats pounding
Like a thousand beating hearts
As your cymbals crash like thunder
and that's just for a start
We'll crank the amplifiers
and begin another song
We'll rock until the daylight
We'll be young and free and strong

Be free my friend, I hope things haven't been too rough
I know I tend To never want to say enough

I'll hear your drum beats pounding
Like a thousand beating hearts
As your cymbals crash like thunder
and that's just for a start
We'll crank the amplifiers
and begin another song
We'll rock until the daylight
We'll be young and free and strong

This one's a little bit lighter.

Nigel, Book Us, Dammit
by Brian Krashpad

NIGEL BOOK US DAMMIT WHAT THE HELL DID WE DO WRONG?
WE PLAYED EVERY BAR IN TOWN, WON’TCHA LISTEN TO OUR SONG?
TO OUR SONG, TO OUR SONG

NIGEL NEVER SAYS NO, HE JUST ALWAYS SAYS HE’LL CALL
BUT THE CALL THAT NEVER COMES IS JUST THE HARDEST CALL OF ALL!

NIGEL BOOK US DAMMIT WHAT THE HELL DID WE DO WRONG?
WE PLAYED EVERY BAR IN TOWN, WON’TCHA LISTEN TO OUR SONG?
TO OUR SONG, TO OUR SONG

NIGEL IS A NICE GUY BUT HE STILL WON’T LET US PLAY
I’LL SEND ANOTHER e-MAIL, THO’ WE SPOKE JUST YESTERDAY…

NIGEL BOOK US DAMMIT WHAT THE HELL DID WE DO WRONG?
WE PLAYED EVERY BAR IN TOWN, WON’TCHA LISTEN TO OUR SONG?
TO OUR SONG, TO OUR SONG

NIGEL SAYS HIS PLACE IS BOOKED FOR 3 MONTHS IN ADVANCE
BUT HOW’LL WE EVER GET TO PLAY IF HE WON’T GIVE US THE CHANCE?

NIGEL BOOK US DAMMIT WHAT THE HELL DID WE DO WRONG?
WE PLAYED EVERY BAR IN TOWN, WON’TCHA LISTEN TO OUR SONG?
TO OUR SONG, TO OUR SONG

From the other Side
By Kris-the-young-dude

Chorus: From the other side you see things differently
You have no Idea what it's like to see
you act like you have nothing to hide
Yet I'm never gonna take no ones side

Verse: You may not noticed but I have seen just about everything
I won't take bribes just so you can take me under your wing
you mayve taught me right from wrong but I know how to get along
Mixed messages but not for long why do you think I'm singing this song

Chorus:

Verse#2

So it's gonna be like this Ignorance is bliss
Listen to me for I have one last wish
I'm stuck in the middle of everything
Just leave me alone and let me sing
You say you know what it's like to be me
take a walk in my shoes and try not to scream
It's alot different than you think
know one knows just what I mean

Sing chorus twice

And then I usually end with a monster guitar solo

That's my latest one. I'm not the greatest songwriter but I like it:)

Lies
By kris-the-young-dude

These lyrics are done to that piano track I made way back when

Verse#1:

Take one step back
Through your lies through your crap
Your floating in a dream nothing is as they seem

Chorus:

Theres a whole lot of lies behind my soul
Dont want to die all alone
Theres a whole lot of lies behind my soul dont want to die alone......Alone

Verse#2 Every day it's just the same
Playing me like some kind of game
walking through the fog
Forever am I lost

Chorus

Verse#3

Cuz theres a whole lot of soul
behind these broken doors
Going through the same my friend
always stuck in whats been again

Theres a whole lot of lies
Theres a whole lot of lies
Theres a whole lot of lies
Theres a whole lot of lies

outro:

Cuz theirs a whole lot of lies behind my soul
Dont want to die all alone (whispered) Alone......

Whoa Kris, eloquent expression of frustration, confusion, & rage.

Do you really grunge & snarl it or you you sing it all sweet & wistful?

Either way, I hope it's cathartic. Reminds me of why I am happy not to be in Junior High or High School anymore.

Haha, I'd forgotten exactly how he'd phrased it. He's funny. Btw, Hoyt basically paid all the expenses for getting that recorded and duplicated, so any sales for a long time will go back to him rather than the band, so I don't have anything personally to gain by y'all buying a copy.

But I do hope you enjoy.

Looking at Kris's rhyme scheme reminded me of something, there's a word for a "near rhyme," as it were, such as where he uses a 1-1-2-2 here but "rhymes" "back" for "crap" depending only on the vowel sounds for continuity of the rhyme scheme, rather than a true rhyme:

Take one step back
Through your lies through your crap
Your floating in a dream
nothing is as they seem

Does anyone know the term for that? I'm pretty sure there is such a word, and it makes a discussion of rhyme schemes a lot shorter than using a full-blown explanation.

I just want to hear more of you guys and support the efforts. I also want to support this method of independent bands selling their music, given the industry today. If it leads to you guys releasing more, or helps you guys keep carrying the flag, that would be great. I want to hear with my own ears what I am seeing in all those great gig shots you post. I love energy driven music, and based on the pics, and the clips, I can tell I will like it. Happy New Year, Barrister Bard!

It depends In parts of songs its sang quiet and the music is quiet and other times it's just loud and crazy.

BTW whats cathartic?

BTW whats cathartic?
A catharsis is something that relieves stress or tension. For me, playing a violent video game is cathartic because I can take out my frustrations in a way that a) won't hurt anybody and b) won't get me arrested and/or defrocked.

Here's my new take on the old standard "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling." It is sung/played to the tune of the chorus to the original song (I don't think anyone actually knows any of the verses), and begins with just the vocal and a clean guitar (for the recorded version this will be an acoustic), singing the orignal lyric at the usual medium tempo.

Then a Ramones-type 4-click by the drumsticks and off we go, sung fast and hard, disortion on, with punkabilly-type solos between and after the two new verses. The title to this reworked version is just called "Irish Eyes:"

IRISH EYES
(Additional lyric c. 2003 B. Krashpad)

(vocal and guitar only):

When Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, 'tis like the morn in Spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they’ll steal your heart away.

(full band comes in, faster)

Five hundred years of oppression
Will make you stop and think.
Or p’raps pick up a rifle, or drive a man to drink.
Well Irish eyes are cryin’,
cause they’re buryin’ dead today.
As the Orangemen go marchin’, singing
Toorah-loorah-ay.

(solo)

Now Irish eyes are smiling,
‘Cause they’re turnin’ in their guns.
And they’re beatin’ swords to plowshares,
Though they’ve only just begun.
Well Irish hearts are happy,
‘cause there’s no more bombs today.
And those eyes will brim with tears of joy
When the soldiers have gone away!

(solo outro)

This is/was a regular in our setlist, and we used to play this at an Irish bar (actual Irish bar run by an Irish family) and I was a wee bit scared to play it for fear it might be taken the wrong way. But the owner actually used to request it. For the recorded version I plan to play mandolin and banjo, in addition to acoustic 12-string and electric guitar, and would love to add an accordian and pennywhistle if I could find someone who could play 'em.

Haha, cool, I was unaware he'd run out of the first pressing. We have basically another CD's worth of stuff but he keeps messing with remixes and stuff. I'm guessing the extra 4 will be the ones he's done tinkering with.

Hope you enjoy.

So it's been a couple months now.... But heres a new one I wrote

It's called "When angels cry"

Verse: Just another day passing me by
Just another life seen through my eyes
They say when you die you go where the angels fly
I guess it's too late to get my ticket to ride

Chorus: I try to defend the defenseless
But when angels cry I always miss
I find it hard for it to be easy
But I find it easy to find it hard

Verse: I guess it's time to put away the pen tonight
I don't have the will to go on and wright
But when angels smile down on me
A weight has been lifted and I have been set free

Chorus

Bridge: And all the angels fly by me
I guess I am just lucky
And all the angels fly by me
This is what it's like to be free

And of course end with a monster solo
