I have 4 Macs in the house, one of which is an older G3 iMac (2000).
It's the 450 MHz, DV+, running 10.2.8 w/576 MB of ram. It's fine for internet access, email and such. But it would need some upgrading to do much more than that (iPhoto or GarageBand).

Would an OSX update and more ram really improve performance all that much? I'm willing to spend a couple hundred bucks if it'll make a difference.

Thanks for any input

upgrading to a real pc (ibm clone) would be a much more feasible task :-)

You won't be able to run Leopard on a G3 Mac according to Apple. A current or recent model Mac Mini might be a good bet. My Intel Mini handles all I can throw at it and comes bundled with iLife. I'd avoid the MS route if at all possible.

I'll add a few grand more in there. I think you are better off with a Mac Mini or a new iMac rather than throwing money into the G3. My older machines (both of my G4's) I am leaving in Tiger rather than Leopard.
