View Full Version : A sad G.A.S confession.

I've lost it.......................it's just not there anymore.....................I never thought it would happen to me.

For the past year, I've walked into music stores and haven't looked at or played any guitar that induced the cold sweats and reflex motion to reach for my wallet. I would bring friends with me in the past whose sole job was to look for my symptoms of rabid GAS and escort me quickly from the premises.

Now, I just ho-hum my way through the stores. For the first time in my playing life, I'm completely satisfied with all of my gear.

Have I lost my edge? :D

You're like cured or sumethin'? ...

That can't be possible... I thought there was no cure?

Did you drink some magic potion, witch-brew, or what? :D

Plank_Spanker

Oh, I don't think that I'm by any means cured. Perhaps a brief remission? :D

It always starts out innocently...

A cheap guitar, an amp that makes noise...

Then you have to have some fancy name on the headstock, and amps with tubes in them...

Then you get into the hard stuff...vintage gear...

Pretty soon you're ignoring your friends, maybe you can't even recognize them anymore. They beg you to get help, but you can't hear them...

Finally, you're out of control...mainlining custom gear from sleazy, soulless, boutique designers who operate out of dark, hidden shops and "labs" known only to the wretched few....

Take this pause as a warning Plank. Step back now ....before it's too late....;)

There is an entry in Wikipedia about the topic of GAS.

I was reading that Wikipedia link and found this "GAS Self-Test". Take it and see where you fall on the GAS scale:

http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/Articles/Avoiding_GAS/GAS-Self-Test.html

I only scored 2; "No substantial GAS detected". I may have lied a couple of times, though....

I took the test and failed:

Your GAS Diagnosis
Your Score: 6 points
A mild case. Better lower that credit limit before you get yourself in trouble.

Your GAS Diagnosis

Your Score:3 pointsNo substantial GAS detected. You've either quit playing, recently gotten married, had kids, or are currently on tour.

I don't understand the disappointment - I don't see anything wrong with reaching a level of satisfaction. You are rid of the "wanting" and found a level of guitar happiness. GAS is easy, what you achieved is challenging and should be the ultimate objective.

To appreciate and enjoy what you have and lose the "want" for more.

I find it commendable.

I'll put in a plug for this book (http://www.lulu.com/content/173291) on GAS. This is written by one of the regulars on the G&L Discussion Page. The neat thing is that he uses all the profits from his book to buy guitars for young people who has a desire to learn how to play.

IMHO, you have discovered the "Fingers-Strings-Amp" connection!!!:AOK:
I may yet achieve this enlightenment, if only I can continue the "Timing-Phrasing-Fretboard Knowledge" connection to a logical conclusion...
Congratulations, Grasshopper, you have done well....

Seriously, Plank, I think you know by now more amphs, guitars, effects, whatever, will not give you the magic ingredient. It's in your fingers, your head, and a great amp and axe. You've got that. Kudos!!!:D

It could be Gear Acquisition Syndrome or Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. I usually see it referred to as Guitar Acquisition Syndrome, but Kris's response would cover all the basis and open up the shopping spree to a greater selection.

I think you hit it! :D

My collection of guitars and amps is at the point where I have everything I need to get the sounds I need. I've never been one to hide behind a ton of FX. I've always been a "touch and feel, wring out the notes" player.

I still have a wee case of GAS. My next purchase is going to be a set of Doug Aldrich humbuckers for my Studio LP..................:dude:

It appears you've passed GAS. I have found my GAS dulling lately. I spend much less time researching gear and drooling over musiciansfriend.com than I used to, and I have greater interest in becoming a better player. Although here's something that never happened to me until recently - I received a gift certificate for the holildays and ordered a Fender Superchamp XD. The cost of the amp exceeded the certificate, and I really shouldn't be spending money right now, but I ordered it anyway. It's here, I like it, I refuse to return it, but I can't help but feel really dirty about it. It's not really guilt, and not buyer's remorse, but rather a dirty feeling of over-indulgence. I guess it is gluttony.

Take two aspirin and we'll be hoping you recover.
