yeah, I'm making a ukulele in my shop class and production has already started, I've got a nice piece of poplar for the neck, and some good western cedar for the body, which is to be box-shaped, accoring to the plans I found here:

http://www.cigarboxguitars.com/PDF/cb_uke_plans.pdf

I know it recommends mahogany for the neck, and a cigar box, but its all a matter of availability, anyways, I just need to find some tuners, fretwire and the distance to space the string spaces on the nut, anyone know some of these things?

Good place to start:
Ukulele World (http://www.ukuleleworld2.com/home.php?cat=17)

You can go 'traditional old school peg' with the tuners, or modern. I have an Oscar Schmidt with nice little Grovers.

Hey Pie - that's cool. I researched ukes a couple years ago when I was buying one as a gift. Can anyone tell me why in the name of the Great Pineapple God, someone designed that instrument with the string pitches out of order! You've got to be kidding me - what sense can be made from that?

Pie, others have already answered your question about supplies for uke so I'll throw in something you didn't ask, by way of motivational support. If you haven't already seen Jake Shimabukuro play ukelele, do a search for him in youtube and prepare to be stunned. Never in my life had I imagined that ukelele could be played like that!

I hope you'll post updates, photos and soundclips as they become available. If you post a video with the uke in youtube, please let me know and I'll add it to TF video throwdown player.

well, I can't get in construction pics, I just don't want to bring cameras into shop class, but we've started, and finished the basis for the neck, we just need to shape it, make the nut and fret it.

Pie, this sounds like a VERY cool project. I'm curious what your teacher and fellow students think about it?

my shop teacher loves it, and a friend also loves it, so he's making one as well, the rest are really mixed between like and dislike.

Ok how do you mod a uke??:poke: ;)

1. Measure soundhole.
2. Cut out soundhole to fit Duncan Invader.
3. Install same. No tone or volume, just WFO.
4. Install jack.
5. Plug in and wail, satisfied the world has seen the first shredder uke.:dude:

 :AOK:

I've seen the former vid, but not the one that you posted Rocket. Thanks!

The uke is indeed an instrument, not a toy.

I think it's time that I tell my ukulele story again.

I was in a music store in England that sold beautiful handmade acoustic string instruments. In addition to guitars they had a bunch of lutes etc. I couldn't afford any of it, but they were great to look at & hold.

All of a sudden a guy

in off the sreet & sez:

I NEED your cheapest ukulele *QUICK*!

:rotflmao: It had me in tears. :rotflmao:

So watchout for the uke & the damage done, pie ;).

Pie man is probably thinking...

"Watchout for the uke and the damage done. A little part of it in everyone?"

Even though it was a fellow Canadian who first penned the lyrics on which this word play is based, perhaps it's a bit obscure for one of such a tender, young age...:D

The path to wisdom, knowledge, and enlightenment begins for the young Grasshopper, as it has for countless millions before him.

It's ok pie_man. We're all confused too, just about different things...:D
