[that just sounds so funny]

i think that if i'm going to actually be chomping my nerves and finally playing in a band, it's imperative that i have a new electric guitar that isn't bout-heavy.

i'm thinking that i absolutely must have a new electric guitar. :dude:

please tell me i'm right, as i am about to go to both dfw and austin and trying out lil honies and blow some decent bread... when i really should be conservative and put it away for other things...

there are other things? Oh, you must be referring to amps:rotflmao:

What sort of music are you going to be playing when you are working with the band? That should come into play a little when you are picking a guitar. Also, try the new ones and then look for a used one of the one or two that you like.

This thing they call GAS has a real grip on you. You and Shiner better start adding on to the house.

Learning on an electric is different to some degree, and it keeps the learning coming for me. I like to go back and forth between acoustic and electric. With so many good quality inexpensive options for decent electrics, no reason not to. For a strat type, you can start looking at the recent Squier threads. Some good bargains there. For LP types, seems an Agile might be the lowest cost best option. For a tele, looks like Squiers or Peaveys are the best starting point. You can always go up from there, but those are some good bang for the buck starting points based on my "research" here. Have fun!

CB...you say 'not bout-heavy', is that right? For your back's sake...so.....

Just tryin' to get a 'reference point' here as to what might work for you.

Do you consider Shiner's OE30 'bout-heavy'?

Your lightest weight electrics are going to be true hollow bodies (not semi-hollows like the OE30). 'Jazz Boxes' are the typical true hollow, but kinda 'fat'. You can get thinner, as thin as the OE30. My Epiphone Casino is an example of such. But does that body size and type suit you?

Speakin' of your sonbyproxy, is my memory accurate here, or didn't he have a Peavey Raptor or something that kinda got Shiner to go off the deep end and start this whole journey for you 2? I ask because: if you were to try that one on, is IT bout-heavy to you?

Oh...did I say : "Go for it, CB" ?

Yep.:dude:

Have you given yourself a ballpark budget?

Ok, go on and try a few of ones like I mentioned. If you are going a little country rock, you might start with the tele type. I am sure you will get into it. Then go with what feels right. They cost like what, maybe one billable hour at the range I was mentioning? A Vox AD30VT, maybe two billable hours at most. Still closer to one I bet. You can afford that much for your progress. You don't need a ton of pedals to get started, esp. with the Vox. I am sure Shiner doesn't mind.

i played the raptor once, when i was just starting to noodle, and before i'd finally picked a guitar up and said 'i'm going to learn how to do this if it kills me' so i don't truly remember how she felt.

Hey CB,
Lots of good suggestions and depending on your price range, the Squire Vintage series (either Strat or Tele) might be a good pick at around $300. Good rep on those Vintage ones.
Try the Xaviere series too, they come in around $175 and I've seen good comments on those.

Well, then...since this will be your first electric of your own, you're gonna be playin' 'old country' and stuff that may be kinda related, some lead lines, but you've been a chord strummer, too, then IMO, I'd suggest that as you shop with an open mind, to test-drive at least a couple of Strats, be they, Squier, Fender Made-in-Mexico, or imiations by other manufacturers... the Strat's design is a perfect blend of form, function and versatility -- which is why it's been so widely and often imitated, the guitar of choice for so many different genres, from country (first) to surf to blues to jazz to rock to grunge...there really isn't any style it can't handle when hooked up to various amp and perhaps fx. It can sound almost like an acoustic guitar doing rhythm to a sassy, jangly electric (think of Lubbock's favorite son, Buddy Holly strumming 'Peggy Sue'...both of those sounds in one song), and then think of Stevie Ray squeezing his soul out of his Strat, whether tears or rage, then think of Jimi wailing the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock.

The Raptor falls into the 'imitator' group, Shiner.

As for the guilt? :rotflmao: You're not Imelda Marcos with da shooz, girl, so think of spending $300 - $500 on your electric as akin to that 20 more pair of shoes you haven't bought...:D

Aw, don't worry about it too much, kid. I (fortunately) learned it about 13 yrs. ago from my lovely wife. She patiently explained it to me...... and I've done my best to avoid it ever since. While I was brought up with the word, and it never meant much to me (in passing), it was used as a hurtful and hated word when she was a child........ and a child never forgets these things.
I can now say "I don't like that", or "It hurts me when you do that".
If a person is raised with hate, they will always have trouble overcoming it.
If they aren't, they'll always have trouble understanding.
I count myself as lucky to have the privilege of knowing such a lovely soul as my wife. She has endured...... I love her so much, and I'll say no more.

But try a Tele. It's so versatile, it's usually overlooked. It's a plain 'ol workhorse of a guitar, very forgiving, low maintenance, simple design, and all around sweetheart. Oh, IMHO, of course.

CB, you'll know which one is right for you once you've gone for the test drive. It will feel at home. There'll be an unmistakable vibe. Comfortable like an old pair of shoes.

As for what you test out or what's on your list, I'm not in disagreement with the Tele fans here, because I'm certainly among them; Strum can vouch for this. Simple, versatile and probably the quintessential Country electric, no doubt.

But riding right alongside the Tele is the Strat, which 'ol Leo developed after that 1st masterpiece because the C&W pickers he listened to for input wanted a little more. So he gave them a guitar with even more sonic range, and a (misnamed) tremolo bar so they could do more stuff emulating a pedal steel guitar. For that single variable alone, I'd suggest if it was one guitar to go with, a Strat will open more doors as you progress.

And that's my 2 cents.

Yep, that was what I was maybe subtly trying to say. Try a strat body too. Very versatile, and with all those nice curves, generally more comfortable. I hope to add a tele one day because of what it is, but I felt getting a strat was more versatile for a first axe. I do know, however, that when I went out to Guitar Center, which has tons of guitars, and some other shops, the one I wanted spoke to me right away, resolving any questions I had. That is why I say other than maybe focusing your search, ignore us idgits and trust your hands and ears. :)

Yeah, I forgot to point out the double cutaway makes upper fret access easier, but also, the contour on the body back is really more comfortable than a Tele's squared-off 'plank' body (sorry, Plank;) ...no other way to say it).

Yeah, I forgot to point out the double cutaway makes upper fret access easier, but also, the contour on the body back is really more comfortable than a Tele's squared-off 'plank' body (sorry, Plank;) ...no other way to say it).

Very true. Which is just one more reason to feel justified with the G.A.S. thoughts of how perfectly reasonable it is to own both.:rotflmao:
The Strat body style is much more comfortable, especially if you tend to "hug" your guitar close (and who wouldn't?:) ).
I personally can't tell much difference in the upper access, my Tele and Strat both meet around the 17th fret on the upper bout, but I'm probably just used to it. The Strat definitely looks sexier, though.
The tremelo (sic) on a Strat does add a facet you won't find on a string-through Tele. I don't think it's been mentioned that pedal steel type string bends (done with the fingers) on a Strat results in the un-bent strings going flat in pitch. There are ways around this, of course, but the easiest solution I've found was to just buy a Tele and a Strat, and use whichever fits the mood the best.
As SVL said, tho, ignore us and buy what you like best.:pancake:
As much as I love both guitars, to be honest, I only ended up with the Tele 'cause it was a bargain, no bids on fleabay and I got it. I play it as much or more than the Strat , tho.

Hey CB sorry to chime in late, but I recently bought a couple of the new Squier Deluxe Strats. One in Daphne Blue with maple board and one in White pearl Metalic. (See my pics). I would highly recommend these. They go for around 250 dollars US, and I would say without a doubt are the nicest guitars I have come across in years. I have 8 Strats and several Gibby style including 4 double cutaway guitars.
My strats range from Squiers to 50th Ann Deluxes, including MIM, CIJ, and MIA. The deluxes have great duncan Design pickups and 250 k Pots. The neck has the same feel and rolled edges as the MIA Deluxe. The colors are amazing and the tone is to die for.
They are made in Indonesia by the Cort factory. They have been making guitars for 30 years for various manufacturers including Fender and Gibson.
With something like this you would not be breaking the bank and you would be getting amazing value let alone a really nice looking playing and sounding guitar.

ZMAN, you should really consider getting a Strat:D

What are the colors referred to in the last picture of the two Strats?

ZMAN

The one labelled 68 and 60th, are my Fender 68 Reissue Crafted in Japan, that is Vintage white. It is a 1998 model with the large headstock and 7.5 radius.
The other one is my 60th Anniversary Fender made in Mexico strat. It is Blizzard pearl, with a very flamey neck. I have have a close up picture of it.
I have since returned a 1980 American strat that I had hoped to buy from a friend but he decided not to sell it. So with the new Deluxes I have 8. I also have a Squier Cherryburst, Squier QMT, 50th Ann., and Deluxe Player.
No more Strats in my future and just one more Les Paul.

I really like the Vintage white. A lot of people don't like it because they say it looks too yellow. The pearl finishes that Fender is using latelyare very nice.
The blizzard pearl is really sweet. The White Pearl Metalic on the Squier Deluxes reminds me of the pearl color on Caddilacs.
It just shows you that if you choose colors and are not swayed by that MIA hype you can get a pretty nice collection. My four Squiers total less than 1000 dollars.

1) highway one series tele
2) classic series classic player baja tele
3) deluxe series nashville tele
4) classic series 72 tele deluxe
5) classic series 72 tele custom
6) special edition koa tele

the one that turned my head today was kept in a wood/glass case, away from the other girls. i had been playing a couple of strats, when the woman who was helping me brought her to me when i asked to play a tele. i know this has to be wrong, but i swear she told me it was an original '78 custom... natural finish... battle scars... she had a history... she had a curved fretboard, and when i plugged her into the 3' Roland they had there, and i plunked away on some 'honkey tonk' on the upper frets, i was sold. i liked the sound. :D

They have a Deluxe Nashville Telecaster where I take lessons and I've played it on a few occasions.

It's the prettiest, great sounding, butt ugly guitar out there and I can tell you I hear it calling me every time a walk into the store. I think any of the above will make a nice addition, now is Shiner fixin on adding to his electric collection (you know he will be trying to take your Tele every time you turn around).:poke:

CB,
I just back from spending the weekend with Kodiak, we went to three different guitar stores in Louisville and checked out several different guitars. I tried tele's with Rosewood & Maple necks , I really thought that one was going to talk to me but it just didn't happen. I tried two hollow bodies and didn't find anything that was different that what I can get out the Strat that was at home. So now I 'm just going to take my time and hopefully find another guitar sometime this year that will give me a bad case of GAS. I will say this that Kodiak's new Idol sound better than anything I picked up this weekend. Good luck with finding the perfect fit.

since ry cooder did all the slide parts for that movie i wonder if he was really using a tele or not....for someone who had never played guitar (ralph macchio) i think ralph did a pretty good job of faking the guitar stuff he was supposed to be playing.

CB,

What you get depends on your budget, but I would consider that your sound will be much more impacted by your amp choice than guitar - so pick yourself a sweet little amp (my ADv30VT does a good job and I got it on the cheap used) and maybe a MIM strat to give you lots of options. we're in houston. made it to bryan about an hour and a half before the shop closed; and i had not seen the guitar in her color, the one i played was kinda cruddy plum-ish color.

he brought her out, and i was thinkin'... 'daaaang... i've found a corvette...'

we got to houston, the byproxy took us to fogo de chao... [i think i just gained five pounds]

then the guys went to get coffee beans in the morning for the french press, and i couldn't stand it. i just had to stay and play her.

[her virgin song was 'wildwood flower']

and i don't feel guilty about buying her at all. the money i bought her with came from some people settling up with me on money i never thought i'd get back... money i'd already spent... and quite frankly, i got her cheaper than any price i've seen for her on the internet, case and all. ;)

muddy, her fretboard looks exactly like the one in your picture, but i haven't bothered going farther than that yet...

Thanks, GG, will be back at home tomorrow and will have to take a new 'Shiner family photo' of the spinal tap house that 'goes to eleven'

Chad, next time we come to Pearl... two weeks from now? dang, we're going to have to take both vehicles just to bring all the gits! :rotflmao: i sure hope Pappy makes it!

Strum... :D no, i'll email you that comment. :rotflmao:

on a side note: byproxy took us to our first official Guitar Center today.

holy schnikies, batman, thank the powers that we don't have one of those near us... i would be in soooo much trouble!!! i managed to not play a single guitar... the only GAS i intend to get in the near future is from greasy mexican food back home... but i DID get an essential piece of clothing for my forum shot with Odyssey.

If it's a certain type of footwear that is common with one of our Idaho fretters I will...I will..., well we'll have to wait and see.

Yep, I'm not real big on those large stores, but GC are like a Home Depot of guitars and you can stay in there for hours.

"Here lies Arthur C Clarke. He never grew up and did not stop growing."

I like the engraving on his tombstone.

I'm going to have:

He always wanted to play guitar and he died trying.

Better than

He's dead, but he's still trying.

...It really freaks out the neighbors.

But it's true, I already have plans to take lessons from Hendrix.

You know CB, if you are not ready to submit yourself completely to the dark side, I found you a starter suit.

not my colors. would have to be blue/black. and unlike annikan... my force runs true. my patriarchy guides me always to the Force. and the White. do, or do not. there is no try. :)

yeah, i think her name is odyssey. :)

o, and Blooze, i promise, i am not a Poser. when i started this thread, i felt absolutely guilty as sin about spending this money, but it fell in my lap this week like a Sign. no more guilt. :D

and yeah, i'm going to have to keep her close to me, shiner and the byproxy were both playing her last night.

Well of course CB, GAS is a force of nature. No mere Poser would ever be able to handle it...

Ok, so you're off the hook on the guilt thing. But we may have another problem now with Shiner. Covetousness? For shame....;)

Let's see...thou shalt not covet thy wife's guitar....nah, he's off the hook too. As my wife is so fond of saying, "what's mine is mine, and what's yours is mine too". I guess if it's good for the goose, it's good for the gander, huh?

(The guitar fell in your lap? Is that something like "it followed me home?" :) )

Enjoy your "Odyssey" (double entendre intended). It'll make a fine companion on your journey....:AOK:
