You're the one playing it.

I was thinking that a tele (maybe a thinline) would really do it.

What are you talking about? You can play rhythm guitar on any damned guitar.

I'd have to agree with everyone else on this one and say the Tele.

I've never owned a Tele, and still don't. But I've been using the Tele sounds on my Variax guitar and found that the Tele tones are some of the most versatile tones out there for rhythm chores. You can cover almost any style with those sounds (other than metal, I would guess).

But a close second would have to be the Strat. It's hard to beat a Strat for the most all-around versatile guitar going, IMHO.

Yes you can, as you can play lead & blues & jazz & country & funk on any guitar.

buuuuuut, rhythm sounds different on different guitars & some are more flexible rhythm machines.

Eg, you might not be satisfied with your funk-rhythm tone on a Les Paul.

Jim, what are the rhythm capabilities of your Newport? I'd imagine that it'd do jazz comping, groove, & perhaps rockabilly well, but what about funk & rock?

Oh....... well, in that case my Tele is the best damned rhythm guitar on the planet.
. I just didn't want to sound too cocky.......

(At least, I'm pretty sure it is. That one of Keef's is good, too.)
