I give a thumbs up for learning fingerpicking as a quick way to sound descent as a beginner. I picked up Mark Hanson's The Art of Contempory Travis Picking and every time I need a relaxing break I do a little something from there. It's easy & I get oohs & ahhs from my wife!

Slide guitar in open G is also as quick way to do something interesting. I haven't found a good book for this yet, but I have fun just following the loose guidelines here:

By the way, for me right now. I like Boutique Clean, with the master cranked & the gain & volume past noon and a wee bit o' compression or comp/chorus on the AD30VT for fingerpickin'. YMMV.
