View Full Version : replacement nut is thinner than existing nut

I bought a pre-slotted Tusq nut ("for Gibson-style guitars") to replace the cheap plastic nut on my Korean Hamer SATF. Tonight I removed the factory nut and found that it is deeper (from the headstock to the fretboard) than the replacement Tusq. Shimming this would look really crappy. Any suggestions for how to deal with the space in the channel?
I suppose I bought the wrong nut. Anyone know a stock nut that will fit nicely?

Thanks

Hi Pickngrin
it would be best to get the right size nut for your guitar..you can shim up the heighth of the nut,but I wouldn't shim the width...the tension from the strings would pull it at an angle..Gibson nuts are 3/16" wide or in metric it would be 4.76mm.do you know the width of the new one and the old one?:)

Tusk makes one for an Epiphone that would probably be a direct fit.
Second row on the left...

Thanks. The factory Hamer nut measures about 1/4", and the Tusq Gibson-style that I have is 3/16". The Epiphone style is 3/16" too, according to that page. The Hamer nut has more of a curved, downward slope on the headstock side.
Any ideas? Anyone have a suitable nut that they would want to swap for this Tusq Gibson?
Thanks

I wish I had one that size to give you Pickngrin...it would be yours..no charge!
the ones I have are probably the same as you have, hopefully some of the other fretters here may be able to help.the only other guitar that I know of that uses that width is Martin, but I am fairly sure that wouldn't work.it may come down to you having to have one made if you can't do it yourself.here is another link you may want to check out.

Thanks... I appreciate it. I'm hoping to avoid having to have a custom nut made, just for cost purposes, but I want something better than the plastic junk that's on there now...

I do understand about the cost of having one made, although I do all my own here in my shop and you do have to have the correct tools to do it properly and it does take time and patience to make one right.Stewmac.com has a step by step instructions on how to do it right.good luck on finding one that will fit pre made.I wish I could of helped more.:)
