I'm wondering specifically about No Quarter when he plays it live. There's distortion, but I can't figure out what (if anything) else.

I don't think BYOC sells one of those, but talent is definitely DIY! :D

Here's a couple I've seen on the web:

the Boss one looks really practical, but those homebrewed, boutique ones just look so sexy!

So not one of you knows for sure what Page used? I figured there was at least one on here that actually knew the answer.

Oops that's your dad? Sorry I thought I was telling you! hahaha Anyway yeah those are the things James Patrick has been known to use in his live act..."back in the day". There are more things he added later on like the MXR Blue Box and various chorus pedals etc.

this according to a Page fanatic.
Page uses
the theremin live during "Whole Lotta Love" and "No Quarter," and
occasionally elsewhere. It was also prominent in the studio.
for what its worth The Beach Boys Good Vibrations intro uses it too.

Can't recall which song offhand, but he used to also use a violin bow.

Pretty sure it's a cello bow. Violin bow would be a tad too short.

While i have heard that he uses the theremin onstage for No Quarter, he doesn't always use it. There are a few videos on Youtube of him playing it on the guitar (Knebworth, Madison Square Garden, and the O2 in December), and it sounds great.
