View Full Version : Help me I'm ampless

Hey folks,

I blew my beloved Line 6 Flextone I and its Floorboard. Darn it, I can't believe it but it's dead. Can you imagine how sad this really makes me? I could never ever love my Flextone III as much as my Flextone I. In fact, I hate the Flex III and this is why I am ampless right now.

Time for a new amp. What can I do? On the one hand I fell in love with ENGL amps. Especially the Screamer 50. But also Marshall is putting out a great 4 Channel amp recently. On the other hand I love small amps, single channel, but these amps will not fit the Metal style I play more than 80% in the last 4 months - due to the contract we signed and metal tracks we have to record.

It's difficult, does someone here have a hint for me? A good amp for both worlds? If you have played the Line6 Spider Valve let me know how it is, although I am kinda fat up though with Line6 products.

Any Multi-Effect maybe? Is there good ones out there?

Thanks for your replies...
Jimi75

Do they have those Hughes and Kettner Statesman series available out your way? ( http://www.thefret.net/showthread.php?t=3462 ) I suppose you would have to use pedals or other effects to get the metal sounds, but is seems a versatile amp with sweet tones from the demos. I have been smitten with these since you posted that thread, and want to know someone that has one of these amphs. :AOK:

Also, nice to hear from you Jimi! I know you said you would be in and out for a while, but it is nice to see you posting. :)

SVL, Thanks for your reply and warm welcome! Man, I entirely forget about H&K! Yeah, I should check the Statesman series as soon as possible. What a great tip!

Hughes and Kettner was my first thought too, before I read Sunvalley's response! The are German amps, right?

What about Koch amps? They are freaking awesome sounding too.

Do you need a multi-channel amp? If so, a Marshall might be the ticket.

More Spider Valve info than you probably need here (http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=312914). I've been following this thread and the consensus is it's a good grab and go rig that can cover a lot of ground in a small package.

I just heard a guy playing this weekend with a PRS hollowbody and this Yamaha DG80-112 (http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/ModelSeriesDetail/0,6373,CNTID%253D1534%2526CTID%253D,00.html) and was very impressed with his sound. You might be able to find one for a good price and your floorboard should work with it.

One amp that is rarely mentioned, and was apparently rarely bought, is the Rocktron Replitone. They've been discontinued, but really got some rave reviews from just about every guitar magazine. Every once in a while you can find a good used on on ebay reasonably priced. If you liked the Line 6 Flextone, the Rocktron may be a good option.

Just buy another Flextone on the 'bay. I greatly dislike the Flextone III's sound myself but I did dig the original. If you ask me you'd be extremely happy scoring a DuoVerb (long since discontinued). I had one of these for a while but flipped it for profit. I wish I hadn't :)

The Line6 page is still working and you can check out the sound samples. This was by far the best amp they produced IMHO:

Boutique Blues Studio (http://line6.com/media/Duoverb/audio/BoutiqueBluesStudio.mp3) is a great showcase track.

Sorry Jimi that I can't help you choose a new amph as I am not that interested in metal...but what the F%^&%$$3334CK did you do to kill your amph?

Did you ever try out the Hughes and Kettner Statesman Jimi? I would love to know what you think. They are not around here for me to check out.

Still have to check the Statesman, but what I heard so far it must be a great amph. As soon as I know more I will write a review.

Thanks Jimi. I looked again online, but there seem to be no stateside dealers at this point that have any, just the switchblade.
