You know, for listening when you're cruising down the road with that expensive petrol in the tank! They don't have to be about cars or driving really, just the type of song you enjoy while driving.

Here are mine (quickly made up in a few minutes):

1. Slow Turning - John Hiatt
2. Highway To Hell - AC/DC
3. American Girl - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakes
4. Let's Go Crazy - Prince
5. Drive My Car - The Beatles
6. Crosstown Traffic - Jimi Hendrix
7. Route 66 - Nat King Cole
8. Life In The Fast Lane - Eagles
9. Detroit Rock City - KISS
10. Sharp Dressed Man - ZZ Top

I can't really think of 10, but there is nothing better for me then a sunny day with the windows down and "Today" by the Smashing Pumpkins comes on the radio.
It always puts me in a good mood even though the song is about suicide.

< Roadhouse Blues - The Doors....
"Keep you eyes on the road your hands upon the wheel..."

< Radar Love - Golden Earing...
It was significant for me at the time, beyond merely a good road song...

< Goin' To Mexico - Steve Miller Band (Number Five)
"Pack my bags
Don't be too slow
I should've quit you baby
A long time ago
I left you flat
And split for Mexico....
...I've got four or five hundred miles to go
down them, southbound highways
53 Studebaker goin' for broke
I'm pushin it night and day
I've had enough of your lies
To last a long long time...."

Another road song with specific meaning during the same time period.

< I Wanna Be Free - Uriah Heep

"As I wake up every day
With no new songs to play
Feelin' like I ought to pack my bags and run
My imagination flies
To some other sunny skies
Where I felt so good and everything was done
And my time, was my own
And my heart, felt so free
Come on!"

OK...so it was my celebrated blue period. And yes, it did involve a woman...

< Crosstown Traffic - Jimi Hendrix...of course

< Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd

< Ramblin Man - Allman Brothers

< Flirtin' With Disaster - Molly Hatchet

< Traffic - Various albums...

< Crossroads - Cream - Wheels of Fire...

That'll do for starters...I know there's more...

Uriah Heep is rumoured to be our prime minister's favourite band, she refuses to comment ;) .

Highway Star - Deep Purple...how could I have forgotten this one?

Highway 61 Revisited - I like the Johnny Winter version myself

Highway Song - Blackfoot

Rockin' Down the Highway - Doobie Brothers

Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf...a classic road song...

Key to the Highway - Freddie King, with a nod to EC as well

Truckin' - Greatful Dead...no list of road songs is complete without this one.

Midnight Rider - Allman Brothers

I agree - Highway Star must be there. It's one of my favourite Deep Purple songs. I also need to another one of their songs - Space Trucking!

Awesome. We have very similar tastes, although if I was to nit pick...

Swap Rob's solo stuff for White Zombie's La Sexorcisto and Astro Creep 2000.

How is Black Sunshine from La Sexorcisto not a driving song with that opening sample..

"Grip the wheel, his knuckles went white with desire. The wheels of his Mustang exploding on the highway like a slug from a .45. True death, 400 horsepower of maximum performance piercing the night. This is Black Sunshine"

Anyway, how freaky is this.. In my car CD player right now I have a mix CD (Whilst I love my ipod, I love making a good mix cd) that actually has several of the same artists you've mentioned. To be specific...

Rammstein - Feuer Frei
RATM - Sleep now in the Fire (same as you haha)
Mastadon - Blood and Thunder
The Hives - AKA IDIOT
White Zombie - Thunderkiss 65 (which was supposedly Sean's nickname)

and of course more.

Sadly the type of music I like to listen to in my car does not encourage safe driving, especially with a V8, so I got's to be careful ;)

A driving song can be something that makes me "dream away" while riding a long road or the highway or a good driving song can be some pretty hard music that kicks me for the moment. Depends on the mood really.

Here's a compilation I would burn on cd for the ride. The order has no meaning...

1. Dire Straits - Sultans of swing
2. Jason Mraz - I'm Yours
3. Eagle Eye Cherry - Safe tonight
4. Jimi Hendrix - All along the watchtower
5. Bruce springsteen - I'm on fire
6. Elvis Presley - You don't have to say you love me
7. Metallica - Master of puppets
8. Thin Lizzy - Cowboy song
9. Bon Jovi - You give love a bad name
10. Bob Marley - No woman no cry (live version)

Ha! Yeah, and that's Iggy Pop doing the spoken word stuff there, which gives it a few dozen coolness points. "Dragula" would still be on my list though, since it was written in honor of Herman Munster's dragster. A whole hell of a lot of White Zombie/Rob Zombie stuff is good driving music. Superbeast, Super Charger Heaven, American Nightmare, Thunderkiss 65 of course.

And I had originally put Feuer Frei on my list, but Heirate Mich is just so damn perverse. :-)

Yeah, I hear you. Heaven help us. :dude:
