I thought that I understood rhythm notation.

Could someone look at the first full measure of Flake by Jack Johnson:

To me it looks like there are 17 sixteenths notes in this measure broken down as follows

A dotted eigth followed by a sixteenth = 4/16 = 1/4

4 sixteenths = 4/16 = 1/4

A sixteenth rest = 1/16

A dotted eigth followed by a sixteenth = 4/16 = 1/4

4 sixteenths = 4/16 = 1/4

It all adds up to 17/16. What's up? What am I doing wrong?

Kill the 1/16 rest. What do you need to rest for anyway?

(Seriously it seems out of place)
