From Gibson.com
Daniel Johnston — Texas-based singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston is probably as well known for his well-publicized bipolar disorder as he is for influencing everyone from Nirvana to Bright Eyes with his idiosyncratic, stripped-down indie rock. After self-releasing countless lo-fi cassettes and spending part of his 30s in a mental institution, he released his major-label debut Fun on Atlantic Records in the mid-’90s, which was produced by the Butthole Surfers’ Paul Leary. After being dropped by Atlantic, Johnston allegedly almost inked a lucrative deal with Elektra, but blew it when he claimed that Metallica was under the influence of Satan and proved himself too unstable for the label.

Instead of packing it in, Johnston continued his formidable musical output, releasing a steady stream of his own albums and EPs and collaborating with artists like Okkervil River and Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous. Artists like Tom Waits and Wilco have covered Johnston, and he remains to be one of the most well respected independent songwriters of his generation. If you’re interested in learning more about Johnston’s trials and tribulations, check out the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston, which offers uncanny insight into Johnston’s condition.
