I was really bummed when I heard the news. Jerry Reed passed away recently (I think it was over the weekend). He was such a great player.
He will be missed. He always sounded great, especially when he played with Chet Atkins.

I wish that I could have met him. Seemed like a really cool guy.

Here's another one that is really cool. He had some chops!

It is a sad loss to the music world. He was one of the best pickers in my book. Ashamedly, I first knew Jerry Reed as the guy on Smokey and the Bandit. It was only later that I discovered his lightning guitar playing -- glad I did.

I grew up listening to country music and Reed was one of my favorites! He definitely had some hot licks and could turn a colorful phrase. He was a nut besides and starred with Burt Reynolds in a couple of movies beside "Smokey and the Bandit".

Anyway, we'll miss you Jerry! :(

Jerry Reed was a gifted songwriter, singer and musician. Fer goodness sake, he was able to write music for, and hang with on stage, with Chet Atkins! He was a solid actor with great comedic timing. He was also self effacing about his talent and highly underrated.

Prayers and condolences to Jerry's family. He'll be missed.

Here's his Obit from the Nashville Tennessean. It's detailed, has links to some mp3 clips, and photos.
Jerry Reed Obit (http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080902/TUNEIN/80902039/1836/TUNEIN02)

As this obit details, Jerry's 'claw' guitar style had a big influence on players growing up on his music. Note the Brad Paisley quote early in. High praise and homage. And you can hear Jerry's style in Paisley's. Nuff 'said.

A good human being has left this planet.

“There’s nothing on earth as powerful as music, period ... I mean, it’s pretty hard to fight and hate and be angry when you’re making music, isn’t it?”

I don't think it's straying OT to post a quick vid of a disciple of Jerry's use of open tunings (he called them 'funny tunings'), his 'claw' picking technique, and mixing in the use of a thumb pick ala Jerry and his big influence and maybe biggest fan, Chet Atkins.

Jimmy Messina, all growed up, showing the lick to a great early 70's 1st album Poco tune:

Those videos were awesome!

I guess it shows my age when I say I've never heard of him. Regrettably so, I hasten to add.

I will definitely check out more of his music!

RIP Jerry
