One of my favorite things to do is to create a song right from scratch with the guys playing along. Almost like it is already written. I can get pretty avant garde but mostly stick to rock and roll changes and rhythms. Mostly I'll come up with a solid framework and then I'll take it home to refine it since other people's time is valuable and I don't want to have them just sitting around while I figure out what I want to do.
This video shows Mike Keneally taking it to the extreme. I have this album and it is brilliant. This is Mike composing a song from scratch in the studio and then recording it.
This is just to show that a few simple ideas thoughtfully laid out and executed by talented players can turn into something of merit. We can all do this to some degree if we try.
