Interesting. I am going to stop by Costco today to pick up some items. I'll see if they have those amps in stores.

Since it only has one 12AX7 I'd bet that the preamp is solid state. Not necessarily bad but they really should state this in their ad copy. Calling it a "tube" amp is only half true.

Sounds good except for the fact that if you get one you'll have to tell your friends that you play with your Johnson.:D

I'm not a fan of 10" speakers though.

Johnson Amplification makes some very nice amps. Some of their discontinued modelers are sought after for their great sounds.

For instance, this is an amazing sounding amp:

I went to the page Robert linked and in there I see:

Preamp: 1 x 12AX7
Power amp: 2 x EL84

It is indeed a tube amp. I like to know whether it sounds like a Marshall.

Per the spec:

Preamp: 1 x 12AX7
Power Amp: 2 x EL84Looks pretty nice with the woodgrain and such. Hmmm...

EDIT: Same as the AXL AT-20 apparently as seen here

t_ross & aeolian,

The 12AX7 is most likely the phase inverter tube, and the preamp is solid state. If this is the case, the 12AX7 is technically part of the power amp. It could be that they use the 12AX7 in the the preamp and use a solid state phase inverter, but unlikely.

Another possibility is that it could be a grounded grid amp output section, sometimes (incorrectly) called "self split." The power tubes are wired to act as their own phase inverter.

The only thing solid state is the rectifier which, according to me, is a good thing
as those diodes will last longer than you'll be walking the earth and the amp remains much cooler.

Robert,

You misspelled "ampf."

Spud,

I don't know which is worse, saying that you play your Johnson or that you sprung the reverb on your Johnson.

I'd apologize for being so sophomoric, but you'd know that I wouldn't really mean it.

I am heading to Twin (falls, ID) to pick up an amph, but it will be a Vyper. I will go next door and look in Costco to see if they have one of these things though.

I went to Costco yesterday to pick up some items, but did not look for that tube amp. I'm going back today for some things I forgot so hopefully I'll remember this time.

The original Johnson amps that made the modelers is no longer in business from what i understand...unfortunately.

The Johnson that Robert is referring to is this company:

Yikes....with a name like "Johnson" amplifiers, let's avoid terms like "playing with your Johnson" and the "feel" of your Johnson :D

So, what's the story with this Johnson, good, bad, don't know?

What's the buzz on the amp?

I looked in Costco when I was there last, none in the Twin Falls store. Could be an online only item.

I don't really know. I've periodically seen them pop up on ebay, but don't know much about the company. Maybe there are some reviews on harmony central.

Finally got back to Costco, they didn't have one at the store I went to, either.
