Interesting. I am going to stop by Costco today to pick up some items. I'll see if they have those amps in stores.

Since it only has one 12AX7 I'd bet that the preamp is solid state. Not necessarily bad but they really should state this in their ad copy. Calling it a "tube" amp is only half true.

Sounds good except for the fact that if you get one you'll have to tell your friends that you play with your Johnson.:D

I'm not a fan of 10" speakers though.

Johnson Amplification makes some very nice amps. Some of their discontinued modelers are sought after for their great sounds.

The 12AX7 is most likely the phase inverter tube, and the preamp is solid state. If this is the case, the 12AX7 is technically part of the power amp. It could be that they use the 12AX7 in the the preamp and use a solid state phase inverter, but unlikely.

Another possibility is that it could be a grounded grid amp output section, sometimes (incorrectly) called "self split." The power tubes are wired to act as their own phase inverter.

The only thing solid state is the rectifier which, according to me, is a good thing
as those diodes will last longer than you'll be walking the earth and the amp remains much cooler.

I don't really know. I've periodically seen them pop up on ebay, but don't know much about the company. Maybe there are some reviews on harmony central.
