heh, heh, borrowed that shot from the MF site. I will see it in person in a few weeks when my B-day comes. I will post pics and clips of course in due time. The pics may reveal some drool however. ;)

I picked this based on clips, vids and a couple of experiences playing the very few semi-hollows I have had access to. I have not played a Viking in particular though. Robert has however, and gives good reports. He is my favorite gear review guy, of course. I am quite excited in fact.

I leaned toward this Hagstrom way back when in a semi-hollow thread.

http://www.thefret.net/showthread.php?t=3276

When I was looking to diversify from a strat, I was all over the map, but finally decided dual humbucker was the best way to spread to the other side of the compass rose. Some sort of Tele was really tempting, esp. the G&Ls and new Squire CV. But that is still somewhat close to what I have. The LP's I tried didn't wow me. The hollows and semis did. I think this one will rock, rockabilly, and give me a little jazz and some sweet humbucker blues. This one seems like it will be a good fit for now.

Here is another vid with some dude playing some blues:

Your influence was actually quite large, Strum. You are passionate about your Dot, and I got to thinking that I was more enthused by the hollows and semis I tried than the LPs. Go with the feeling. So, though I was for a while on a thinline tele track, I got to thinking I ought to look more closely at 'bucker guitars, since I have a nice set of single coils in a nice guitar already. DVM sent me a couple of clips of his Dot and LP, and that helped to seal it. Thanks for the help in shopping. :AOK:

SunvalleySteve, now that is a purdy guitar.. Come on over the pond and I´ll show you the Hagstrom museum! Someday before the kids leave the house, I am hoping to make a trip up that way. I will need to be heading to Norway to check that out, but I can't come that close and not try to hook up. :thwap: It would be very fun.

For anyone that is interested, here is a link to the stat page (mine is the one in the middle, shown in black), with links to 3 magazine reviews at the bottom of the page, two pickup clips, a link to a good demo vid on the upper right that runs the guitar through its paces, and if you click "ARTISTS" at the top of the page, you can click a vid with Dweezil showing of his Viking, that he modded with an additional toggle that adds mid-range.

the one I am ordering is the standard viking with set neck like the white one he shows second in this vid. The cherry color is probably less burgandy in appearance then the guitar porn shot I embedded here and more like the transparent cherry you see in the above vid. A little more "red" and less dark cherry or burgandy. I will post pics of the actual unit and give a full report in a few weeks. I don't get it for a few weeks yet as I mentioned above. The only diff that I can discern between the std. Vik and the Vik dlx is the fret markers. Mine has the dots.

Thanks everyone for the congrats, and to everyone who helped out while I shopped all over the map before reaching this conclusion. Like I said, once I have had some time with it, a full report will be shared. :)

Looks like you made an excellent choice, Steve. :AOK:

Worth stretching that budget target a bit. ;)

The harp tailpiece instead of a stop tailpiece is a subtle design element. Besides what it can do for tone, it makes it easy to add a Bigsby unit if you ever decide you want to add that.

Good luck with it. Looking forward to pics whan she lands.

Dang that is a beauty. Maybe I'll get one too.

Spud and I are going to make sure all is good, but it looks that way, and we have a good connection for anyone interested. This gentleman has some stock in cherry that he will sell for an excellent price, and generally gets all colors in. The cherry color did not move as well this year, so I got a very good price. He also has B stock that is priced well, and it appears that he is pretty good with his word. I wanted A stock with warranty so I spent just a bit more.

The guy's name is Tim Mauery and he has an ebay store, listed as mauery21804

You can get his phone number off his seller info, and he has been great so far.

A herd with versatiliy - that's the goal. As we discussed, this is one fine addition to the collection. I think you did a great job of determining what was best, finding a great deal, and fighting off GAS while looking until you found what was right for you. SVL I'm happy for you and of course a little envious. Spud says it's "a keeper" and I understand he's played one or two guitars in his day.

I had run across that vid as well, and this one highlights the nice woody cleans really well I think. Now if I can only get myself playing as well as the vids one of these days. Yah, I am very happy with the find. And with the deals Spud and me found, it is to me a no brainer if you are in the market for this type of guitar. I think ol' Spudley is happy too that I turned us on to them, based on his report from his first gig with his. I was in Boise on Thursday and checked out the Gretsch Electromactic Hollowbodys, both the single cutaway and new double cutaway (which is really cool), and they are sweet as well, but I really love this guitar. The full hollowbody Electromactics are not as diverse as this semihollow Viking guitar in my opinion.
