View Full Version : Which Semi/Hollow Body?

I'd love to add one to the lineup.

I've been looking at Schecter's Corsair or the Reverend Manta Ray.
Both seem to be well built, quality instruments for this price point ($1000 or less).

I've tried the Reverend. Found it played well and had nice punchy tone. Have not tried the Corsair.

Have you played either one? Thoughts??

This thread http://www.thefret.net/showthread.php?t=3276&page=2 had some decent discussion about semis/hollows of various types, and mentioned at least one of the two you are looking at, even if they were not included in the poll. Maybe the thread helps.

I have one of the Hagstrom Vikings coming sometime in the next few weeks.

The info was buried in this mystery thread started off by Spud:

http://www.thefret.net/showthread.php?t=8598&highlight=hagstrom+viking Rocket guesses the guitar and Algonquin, the purchaser on page 2. Then I admit it on page 3. I will get my hands on it in a coupla weeks, when my birthday comes. Pics and clips will follow.

You were actually an influence Trev, for sure. I am excited.

Radioboy, I am not sure which one you will end up with, but I am glad I went in this direction to diversify my guitar lineup. :AOK:

That's a tough one Radioboy... there's just too many to choose from. I think there are some great ones to be had from Epiphone, Hagstrom, Ibanez, Hamer and Washburn. Your personal preferences are going to be the deciding factor here. Ibanez has some really nice models with a Bigsby/Gretch style vibrato arm, Epi has the Sheraton which is an absolutely beautiful guitar with bindings and inlays. Good luck with your search, it should be a lot of fun! :AOK:

Cheers

I like the Ibanez artcores - tried a few. What I'd REALLY like is a Gordon Smith Galaxy...........................

I think you'd probably be fine with either of the guitars mentioned in the OP. The Schecter I have (not a semi/hollow) is a nice inexpensive guitar, and both Schecter and Reverend have good reps.

In addition to the Artcores previously mentioned, also consider the Gretsch Electromatic semi/hollows, again I haven't played these but lots of people I know and whose opinions I respect have, and the reports I've seen are uniformly favorable. Another possibility is a used DeArmond semi/hollow (I've owned many great DeArmonds though only solidbodies).

Last, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Epi "Kat" series, which are small-bodied semi's in between the size of a Les Paul and a 335-style. I picked up this 'un for 3 bills in a local pawn this summer:

I really like the Gretsch Electromactic when I was in the guitar shop last, and but for wanting to split the difference and not go complete hollowbody size right now (and getting a great deal on the Hagstrom), may have gone that way. I really liked it. I am also interested in the Epi Alleykats that are like the Wildcats except with humbuckers. If I saw a Wildkat or an Alleykat, I would have to try it out.

Well RadioBoy... have we been any help at all, or have we just added more confusion.

Oh..oh..oh, man....I just found another gorgeous tone machine. But I need to bother you guys one more time on this one, the Hagstrom Viking. What's up with this "Resinator Fretboard"? Does it feel any different than ebony? I'll have to get over to the local shop & check it out. AND I gotta win the lottery.

I have a pretty good source for Viking deals so PM me if you want more info.

The fretboard is kind of hard like ebony but it is nonporous. It is a resin that resembles wood without the grain texture. It makes the neck extremely fast and vibrato smooth. It's a great compound that requires no maintenance.

I got a great deal on a new Schecter semi hollow hybrid a few months ago. It looks like a C1 but is semi hollow and has two buckers that I replaced with nickel plated Seymour Duncans, '59 in neck and JB in bridge, plus it has piezo electric pups in the bridge graphtec saddles.

Awesome swamp ash top and thick mahogany bottom beautiful binding and a super high quality looking guitar; like a really nice looking Gibson or something really high quality. It also sounds incredible even with the stock duncan designed pups it was awesome; plus it's stereo, you can plug it into two amps at once - a guitar amp and an acoustic amp or PA for optimum unbelievable tone when blending the acoustic and bucker pups.

You can probably still find one at a GC if you have them search. I think they were about eight hundred.

I have an awesome sounding great guitar that is real special but wasn't too expensive but just "made it" for me: an Ibanez, never thought I'd get one, Artcore AS73 trans cherry that sounds awesome. I mean really nice. To me it sounded better than the Dot, Sheraton which I love, or the Casino. Every guitar is different sounding, even the same models. I always like to play them and pick the one I like best regardless of price or brand if it's within my budget. But I buy off the net sites too and have had great success.

You might like to try to find and check out one of those Schecters like I have. You will be really surprised I would guess. They don't look like 335's though.

Hope this give you some more ideas,

Duffy
