View Full Version : BYOC Tremolo Build - Finishing POLL!

I'm on to another short pedal project--the BYOC Tremolo kit I bought at the same time I got SVL's Mouse kit. Been wanting a good trem pedal for awhile, and this one uses the famous "Electronics Australia" circuit from the late '60's. It's the basis of many, many commerical and DIY trem pedals, because it just sounds S-O-O-O good.

Anyway, I came up with two different finishing designs and thought I'd throw them out here for vote. One uses a surfing theme (music doesn't get much "trem-ier" than the surf instrumental classics!), and one with an early Elvis theme--"Shakin' All Over". Additionally, I threw in a variant of the surf version, because Tone2TheBone suggested that it should really be in "surf green" rather than the blue color I used originally.

So anyway, here are the three versions--vote for your preference. I do, however, reserve the right to use whichever one I damned well please! ;) :D

You could always combine the themes:

(Rocket: Hope you don't mind that I edited this post of yours. That image file wouldn't display, so I downloaded it & stuck a copy in my images here at TheFret. Wanted everybody else to be able to see your "creative solution"!

Gives new meaning to "Rockin' the Vote" I still voted Elvis, but tremelo has such surf guitar connections that Rocket's idea of combining holds merit. could just stick a coupla surfboards on like they are sticking out of the sand across from where Elvis is shakin' it. Like right above "Man" in "Duh voodoo man"

OK, OK. The people have spoken. But I really preferred that surf theme, so I figured I needed another opinion. So I went and asked my wife--the Beach Boys fan--for her opinion, 'cuz I knew she'd agree with me. Yeah, you guessed it--she liked Elvis better, too. So what does she know?? I mean, just consider her taste in men!! So I asked my son. Yep, another Elvis vote. :thwap: I surrender....

I had pancakes for breakfast today. I tried to get the wife to make Warren cakes, but the kids wouldn't leave the house.

Here are a couple of shots of the finished BYOC tremolo pedal, plus a link to a clip. Like I said before, ain't nuthin' that says "tremolo" like Fender-based surf music, so the clip will be very familiar to those children of the 60's like myself. Recorded with my "surf green" (what else??) Xaviere XV870 Strat copy on the middle pickup through my Fender Blues Junior, set up very clean. Besides the tremolo pedal, there's some reverb going on, but no other effects.

One other thing--the LED flashes in time with the rate setting of the effect. Kinda cool!

Awesome pedal isn't it :) I have the same one and I was blown away by the sound it's capable of.

As to finish, it's weird. All of my pedals are elaborately finished.. except the trem. It's in the wider case than yours, but somehow it spoke to me and said "I wanna be shiny" so I used polished aluminium knobs, a blue LED in a chrome holder (I didn't wire the LED to flash, not my cup of tea) and then polished the housing. Sometimes I think it deserves a name and control labels, but it just feels right all naked and silver.

For what it's worth, if you have an tube amp with FX loop, try this pedal in it. It's really worthwhile messing with extra cables and stuff for the glorious tone.

Oh and for me the instant I heard it for the first time I had to go learn "Bang Bang" by Nancy Sinatra. This pedal can help you totally cop that sound.
