Hand rest post...?

I was watching a Bruce Sprinsteen program on VH1 last night (concert in N.Y.C. last year?), and noticed that one of the guitar players had a big, round bumper-like thingie on his strat, located approximately below the bridge pickup.

I assume it is a hand rest that he uses while finger-picking.

Correct?

BTW, I never paid much attention to Bruce Springteen before... Very interesting lyrics. I now need to know if he writes the stuff himself.

Yes Bruce does write his stuff. His lyrics are really amazing to me. Go back to all the 70's stuff up through the River in 1980 if you have not already. Classic stuff.
