I somehow wiped out the little speaker icon that was down in the lower right hand corner of the screen (next to the clock). Does anyone know how to get it back? I checked in control panel, but nothing.

When you would double click on the speaker icon you would get volume, balance, and a third category (don't recall what it is) at the bottom of the slide bar there was a mute box you could check.

So, it has vanished. I went into notifications and set it as "always show" but still no luck.

For Windows XP:

Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices

Then check the box next to "Place volume icon in the taskbar" in the middle of the Volume tab of the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties dialog box.

It responds: Volume control program has not been installed.

I tried System Restore, but it won't let me go back to last week just prior to me accidentally deleting it (I assume).

Try googling "Volume control program has not been installed". Looks like you're not the first to have this happen....

Reinstall sound drivers.
