I did a little poking around Eurotubes site after I added the link for Algonquin in my post to him concerning his C-30 tube rattle, and look what I found...........this might be nice to know if you're a Peavey power hound and on a budget. "Carbon copies of the Peavey amps in almost every way"
XXX, 5150, and 5150II clones, and not a lotta coin...............

I find it a little weird to think of the concept of a "poor man's Peavey." I thought the whole point of Peavey was to have good gear at a good price.

The Peaveys (and Mesa Dual Rectos) are based on the Soldano SLO circuit.

Which, I thought, was a modified Marshall circuit, right?

Correct, the SLO is a a super high gain Marshall circuit. Except unlike the Marshalls, most of the distortion in the SLO comes from the preamp. The power amp stays relatively clean.

And the Marshall circuit evolved from the Fender Bassman circuit, which evolved from a Western Electric circuit.

Here is a good, easy-to-understand guide on the evolution of guitar amps:

http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/guitar-amp-evolution.html

It explains how tone controls, gain stages, and their configuration in the circuit affects tone. :AOK:
