OK. That's a standard name. Have you check continuity between the cartridge leads and the leads going to the amp?

White = Left + = Left (usually white or black) center conductor

Did you measure to see if your 12th fret was 1/2 the distance to the bridge?

From what I found on the Technics SL-230, the headshell should have the following wire colors:

White = Left +
Blue = Left -
Red = Right +
Green = Right -

Yup. Speaker watt rating should be larger than amp watt rating.

No. It'd work better wired:

Preamp -> Power Amp -> Speaker

Ran into the same problem with my Partsocaster. After I added a fourth spring and widened, not deepened the string slots in the nut, she's a lot better also. Also, use a good lubricant like Big Bends...
