Saving the money towards an actual deluxe is a good idea. IMO I've yet to hear an OD pedal that matched the tone of a good amp. Some do apparently close and if you were to take that route, I might...

While I'm not exactly much of a high-gain player myself, I know others who are never seem to be satisfied with any of Fender's products.

I believe if you look on ebay, you can find some rubber tube rings that go around the tube and can help dampen the springs as well.

You don't hear this guy's name mentioned too much but... John Scofield. Def has a unique style.

The pentatonic is always a great place to start. That def opened things up for me when I was around your age.

I've never tried the Ampeg Super-Jet but my J20 is a great amp with good clean headroom for such a compact rig.
