NGD - Spreading the Dot love

Well, look what followed me home. A Saein built Dot in cherryburst with Duncan 59s. After a little setup to my tastes this is a great guitar.
This is one of the seller's pictures, I haven't got any decent light here today to shoot some of my own.

Even better, he included the original pickups in the deal so they'll pay for a replacement selector switch. That's the only fault I can find now I've raised the action to a sensible height, balanced the pickups and raised the tailpiece a turn or so to reduce the string tension.

As for tones, I still can't get over the way it sounds through the JC model but I quite like the AC30 (British invasion), Tweed (Chuck Berry and country-rock) and Marshall models. Need to stand further back on the Marshall but man, it's Live Cream time

That must be a rare bird. I haven't seen too many in Cherry Sunburst. Don't sweat the pickup switch. That is a given on ANY Epi. I have replaced them on all but one of my Epis. The original pickups are not bad but they are nice to have if anyone wants to put it back to original. Nice score. A very Larry Carlton vibe going there.

Beautiful guitar, Mark! I love my Epi Casino, but, damn, the toggle switch is SUCH crap! Get ready to change that out if it is still the original

Yah, a semi is a nice complement to a single coil Fender. Congrats on yours! Forgive the ignorance, what does Saein built mean?

Saein Korea is one of the most sought after Epis. They were excellent quality.
Epiphone had several Korean factories. After the Sammick built Epiphones the Saein were the best. I had a Saein built Custom plus LP. It was amazing. I stupidly traded it and regretted it immediatly. It was the same color as his Dot.

I was that close to getting a Samick "The Samick" 335 copy. Long guard, early 50's type burst (just like my J45

: ), bound fingerboard and a slightly modified "open book" headstock but it sold before I could get the cash together. It was cheaper too. This was second choice but I'm not complaining. This Dot is very hard to fault on fit and finish and plays and sounds just great.

A couple of us here have Sammick built Sheratons. They are some of the niceste 335 Style guitars out there. Mine is a natural. It really has a great neck and I would put against my 335 any day. The only draw back is the electronics. I have always thought about putting a set of 57s in her but I leave most of my guitars as they came.
Of course it has a Gibson selector switch, the Epi switch as usual failed.

Mine's an '01 Samick Epi Sheraton II I scored it used, but primo, at my Local GAS Station. It sounded great through a Peavey Classic 30 on the floor -- the neck pup wasn't typically 'muddy' or lackluster clean like other Epi Dots I'd tried before. But the toggle sucked (flipped too easily, not catching and holding) and the pots were not as sensitive as I like.

So, before taking it home, I had the tech do a setup to suit me and to go in to replace the crummy toggle w/ a gold-capped Switchcraft and all the pots w/ DiMarzio 500K Custom (Audio) Tapers.

He called me up to tell me he had bad news about the pickups, he couldn't explain why over the phone, and to stop by to have a look at them.

I get there, the Sherri's on the bench with the pups hanging out.

Lo & behold, the previous owner had put in a set of Gibson Classic 57's (not a Classic Plus in the bridge hole, though)

Why he hadn't told the store owner was beyond both of us, other than he'd traded it to get a used Heritage H535(m/n?) that had landed and probably

didn't care.

Talk about lucking out. I thought you changed them. I knew you changed the switch and pots, and now that I remeber you did mention the pickups were left by the previous owner.
Mark thinking back I reallly have not seen a dot in the color before. It must have been a special edition. Do you know what year it is?

My Dot's label says "DOT HS" which I assume stands for "Heritage Sunburst" (Gibson speak for what the rest of us call cherryburst). The serial dates it to November '01. Saein had plants in both Korea and China during this period according to The Guitar Dater Project.

The seller had it listed as a Dot Deluxe but I disabused him of that notion. Those guitars have flame veneer and gold hardware (while it lasts

).

Either way it is a rare bird and I would say it is a keeper. And you are correct about the gold hardware. More like a Spray Tan. I have gold hardware on several guitars and none has faded as badly as my Epis. I could not have resisted.
