Default Saw a NICE bass today (pics)

A couple of months back, I overheard a young engineer I work with talking with his friends at lunch. Seems his grandfather had just passed away and his grandmother had asked him if he wanted his granddad's old bass. I piped up and asked him what kind it was and he said it was a Fender, but he didn't know what kind. I asked how old, and he knew it was older than him (he's mid-20's). I told him to bring it in and we'd check it out.

Well, after pestering him a few times, he was over at grandma's this weekend for Mother's Day and remembered to take it out of the closet where it was stored. He brought it into my office late in the day, I checked it out and looked up the serial number on the Fender website. Turns out that it's a '76 Jazz bass, and was in really nice shape. Kind of dirty/dusty and had one large buckle rash spot in the middle of the back, but was otherwise virtually unmarked. Classic Fender sunburst finish. I took a couple of photos (see below). Forgot to turn it over and get a shot of the back, including the serial number on the neck joint cover plate, but it was S/N 679386.

From a quick web search, look's like it's worth somewhere around $2000, plus or minus a few hundred. Maybe some of you bass aficionados would have a more precise estimate? I was hoping it might turn out to be pre-CBS and be worth some serious coin, but no such luck.

    Anyway, here are the pics:

I think that's mostly due to the angle I took that shot at to try and minimize flash reflection. I'm sure it's in need of some attention/adjustment though--he thought it probably hadn't been touched in 15 years....

That is a sweet looking bass. Don't know about the neck though. You will have to adjust it and give it some days to see what it will be then like. Be careful there, a friend of mine once bought an old J-Bass that a studio owner sold him, afterwards a guitar tech figured that the neck was unfixably damaged.
