    Default Hey PC guy's

Not politically correct, the other PC..
I have my old XP machine I want to convert to Linux.
I have the iso for ubuntu 9.04, it's 700 meg. I burnt it to a DVD and tried to install 3 times before I remembered the freaking winbox only has a cd r/w. : duhh.
Any suggestions ? maybe I can load it from an external usb drive ?

    thanks in advance.

Buring on my iMac btw.. .. tried a few things, when I originally tried to burn it to a cd I was using toast, it barfed because it wouldn't fit on a cd, so I used a dvd.
This time around I tried using the mac disk utility and it seems to be burning on a cd.. strange.. fm I guess.

Try Linux Mint. Version 7, Gloria, was just released. It is Ubuntu based (which means it's a Debian variant) and includes everything in the OS, unlike Ubuntu that packages FOSS only software. This means no hunting for flash, codecs, etc. You will love Mint.

If your computer can boot from a USB stick (doubtful) you could try it that way. I can't believe that the Ubuntu ISO would be too big for a standard 700M CD-R.

We've all suffered from occasional afflictions of PEBKAC. Like the time I wanted to erase my "fonts" directory to I typed "rm -rf fo" and then his tab to auto-complete it and quickly hit enter. That would have worked out great except that I typed "fi" instead of "fo" which auto-completed to "files" and proceeded to blow away all of my files. Every last one. I would have been really ticked off if I had not just made a backup 1/2 hour before that.

Or the time a buddy of mine wanted to blow away his Linux installation to install a different distro. So, as root, he typed "rm -rf /" which would definitely do the trick. Except that this was a dual-boot Linux and Windows system and he forgot that he had his Windows partition mounted so he managed to blow that one away too.

    Ted,

    I've installed this one before:

    http://wubi-installer.org/

Works pretty well, although it takes quite a while to download all the updates.

It also gives you a choice of three different desktop environments to use.

    I only had 700 meg cd's.
It appears to be loading on the $hitbox as we speak.

Hey Stinger, I borrowed this old Toshiba Satellite 2100 with only 64 meg of RAM.
Is there a particular flavor of Linux that you would suggest for such a doorstop ?

    thanks

Try either Damn Small Linux or, even better, Puppy Linux. I put Puppy on an old IBM 600E and it made it seem like a new system.
