First listen. Love it.
It's definitely got a different feel than the previous as it's a solo record (no 400 unit) and the songs are mostly darker and more personal. It's really a great look at how far he's come as a songwriter.
There was a good piece in the NY Times Magazine section a week or so ago about Isbell and this album. Worth a read...

It's long, it's pretentious, and it's pretty cool.

Alison Krauss & Union Station - Paper Airplane
One of my favorite vocalists.
And I've been really enjoying Jason Isbell's song writing and simple production in Southeastern.
He dug deep into his soul for these personal songs.
Agree on both counts.
Alison Krauss' voice is mesmerizing for me. Also, her brother Victor Krauss is an amazing bass player in his own right, and a frequent collaborator with Bill Frisell, so that's cool too.
As for Isbell, he seemingly gets better with each new song he writes. It's a very personal album which can go either way for a fan. Isbell is such a captivating storyteller that you can't help but get drawn in.
In honor of Father's Day, here's some sage advice from Jason Isbell's dad...
Sound familiar?
Found it posted on an R&B/soul blog I visit frequently where it was pointed out that it became this five years later...

Wow, plenty of emotional blues here in this live performance.
First listen to Frisell's latest. Anyone shocked that I love it?
Listened to the whole album for the first time via Google Play All Access. It seems like they can't decide if they want to be Aerosmith, Green Day, or Anthrax. A couple of songs on there are surprisingly heavy.

Preparing to begin a few weeks of collaborating on some original music for a friend's short film so this is an obvious choice. I love the soundtracks to Leone's "Dollars Trilogy" as much as the next person, but this one is still my favorite.
I also can't believe I never put Allesandro Allesandroni in my list of influential guitarists. Have any of us that have seen these Westerns (or a Tarantino movie) not been influenced by that guitar? He also does all the whistling. You know you hear it right now.
