I refuse to anthropomorphize a guitar, a boat, a car or anything else that isn't a human.

You know, I almost put a caveat in there about pets. I routinely ask my husky, Ned, why he can't act like a normal human being.

LOL I was just teasing you anyways, but I think you knew that. :-)

"Ned" is a great name for a husky, BTW.

It's a term of endearment. It's a thing of beauty. And what do we (as males) most relate to as objects of beauty? Well, I think that except for maybe, Tio we'd say women.

We're "arteests" right. Who the heck wants to wax poetically about their guitar, "Harold", "Morgan, or "Bud", when you could have instead a Desiree, Monique, or Michelle. Viva le Femme, Eh?

Ah, nothing relieves the discomfort of GAS pains like the sound of the UPS truck rumbling down your street. It's like the musician's Beano.

Sometimes in other languages, like German for instance, nouns are given gender and are referred to with words like der (masculine) die (feminine) das (nuter). I wouldn't be surprised if that is where it originated. I have never referred to my instruments with gender except to describe a Strat as a bit** to play.

I don't think I've ever referred to an instrument as anything but "it" or "my guitar." Maybe "the Floyd" or something when I had more than one guitar and needed to differentiate.

Having taken two years of German in high school, that was the first thing I thought of. You might be on to something. But what do we refer to as "he"? Not my car, too tempermental. I can't think of anything I call "him". Not even my brother, God bless her.

I suppose I opened myself up for that one. My point of course, in my original post, was that I couldn't imagine anyone referring to THAT particular instrument as a she, as I DO WITH MY GUITARS. As you'll see in my other threads. I don't name them, but they are feminine, for some odd reason. Robert's got me pondering that now.

Anything that we gush over, dote on, adore...etc, takes on a feminine identity when it's inanimate. hmmm, I'm sure Freud would've loved this.
