SRV made the Strat sound better than anyone else, IMHO
The threads on 'Are you tired of strats' and 'SRV all-star tribute' got me thinking about examples of my favorite strat tones - and I was wondering if it's legal to post short clips (or links to them) that would demonstrate it. I'd post bits from SRV's 'Tin Pan Alley' and from Clapton playing on Taj Mahal's 'Here in the Dark' (I assume that he's playing a strat here - huge throaty tone)- Does anyone know if it is okay to post excerpts?

I don't know about that. I would guess not. But what do I know? Not my legal area.
My favorite strat tone can be viewed online if you search. Youtube does not have it, but if you look around you can find it.
It is John Mayer on Austin City Limits in late '07. A great variety of tones, and really my favorite example of his tones I can find. Hard to find vid though.
Another good example is on youtube here from the Live in LA DVD. I really do like Mayer's strat tone through those two rock amphs. I may like overall the ACL tones overall better, but this is good too. Say what you want about the guy, but he has great chops, and amazing strat tones.

'Tin Pan Alley' is probably known/available to many of you, but here's a link to Amazon and the Taj Mahal cd, where you can hear a short clip from 'Here in the Dark'..... This must be legal!

Yeah, I thinking linking to an Amazon site where you can sample a cd for purchase is legal.

I mainly like the driven Strat sound.
Right here for balls to the walls Strat sound

As Jimi points out Craig Erickson gets great sounds too especially on the Cosmic Farm album. Totally groovy stuff.
I also like JJ Marsh's tone
Joe B's Strat in this is nice too

"No Tele For you." - The Tele Nazi
Ha! Tele-ish now inbound.
When I think of the Stratocaster, the obvious tones that come to mind are SRV and Jimi.
My personal favorite tones Jimi used are in Little Wing and Voodoo Child (Slight Return), especially his Live At Berkeley version. And oh... how could anyone forget the solo in Machine Gun on Band of Gypsys?
"It's funny the way most people love the dead. Once you are dead, you are made for life." - Jimi Hendrix
I dig the beck tone recenly!!! (from ronnie scotts with his vintage modern, tal and joss included with volume swells)
"I love being alive and I will be the best man I possibly can. I will take love wherever I find it and offer it to whoever will take it... seek knowledge from those wiser and teach those who wish to learn from me."

You come to a point in your life when you really don't care what people think about you, you just care what you think about yourself." - Evel Knievel
Here is another good one.

Hey, what about Knopfler???!!! An entire arsenal of unique tones.
Fairly lousy audio but pretty fantastic tone imo
Electric: Fat strat > Korg PB > TS7 > DS1 > DD-20 > Cube 60 (Fender model)
Acoustic: Guitar > microphone > audience

Mike Landau always has killer Strat tone. I think he uses a bit of Arion SCH-1 Chorus for that Leslie-type sound.
Just a camcorder recording. I wish he would produce a live DVD some day.

This guy has a great tone, borrowed from SRV and Hendrix but still a great sound
