paint over tru-oil finish?

I've got a Peavey Foundation bass that I've had for years, picked it up used early in college. I got tired of the red finish and a year or two ago, I stripped it, stained it, and applied tru-oil (my first attempt at a refinish). The body is poplar, and the grain isn't really very nice. I'm thinking that it would be nice with a solid black body. Can I prime over the tru oil and then paint and clear coat?
Do I need to remove the tru oil? Would this be a complete waste of time and money?

I think it would be a waste of time and energy. The oil has permeated the wood so it can probably never be extracted. I don't know how good of a primer you could find that would allow a paint to stick to an oiled surface. You could always try anyway. You might get a few years out of it before the paint really starts coming off...or you might not.

I know nitrocellulose lacquer works over TruOil. Since it's been on there a while I'd give it a light sanding with 600 grit before priming.
