I prefer soapbars for height adjustability and looks.
Do what speaks to you and the guitar.
I have this semi-OK Pacifica and I thought of making it a P90 rough project,
I want to go with no pickguard (mostly), and mount the P90s directly to the bottom of swimming pool.
Dogear or soapbar, which type would work best?

Have a look at BCDON's new Godin. It's soap bars all the way for my money. I actually have custom humbucker sized P90's in my BB1200 and they look awesome.
+1 on the soapbars.
This is a Strat style guitar, right? Rondo has the Hawk Strat style guitar with P90s for $109. http://www.rondomusic.com/hawkmnp90vwh.html
It's already prerouted for P90s...

I did find affordable soapbar P90s on eBay, we will see what comes out of this.
