Default Dream Theater - The Movie

Apparently Dream Theater has made a movie about the search for their new drummer. Here is the trailer

I'm a huge DT and Petrucci fan, but this whole sequence of events makes me think that this stuff between Portnoy and the rest of the band had been brewing for a long time. I'm not too familiar with some of the candidates, but Mike Mangini has been mentioned more often than the rest.

They'll likely continue on with this new line up for an album or two, and then they'll do their rock-band thing and have some sort of reunion tour with Portnoy again. Generally the way stuff like this works. It'll be interesting to see what the new album sounds like without Portnoy though.

Portnoy was such an integral part of the DT sound. It's gonna be really interesting to see what the end result is. If any band can pull off continuing without a founding member, DT can.

Mike has been integral in several other great projects and I think he just likes to be diverse. He really likes working with Neal Morse. He's been on most of his albums, did Yellow Matter Custard, Transatlantic (which has been hugely successful). He's also done O.S.I., Liquid Tension Experiment, Avenge Sevenfold, Hammer of the Gods, and Amazing Journey as well. I feel like Mike just wants to see what else he can accomplish. After all, he's the youngest drummer inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Maybe he'll show up on the next Flower Kings album too. Who knows?

Well, they have done it before, but without Bodin, Reingold and Froberg.

Part 2 of the movie - this is really good. It's the auditions and the guy I was hoping for is in the top two, Marco Minneman. It seems as if Dream Theater were actually in awe of him. Funny.

I've only been following this because of my drummer friend who is obsessed with Dream Theater and Portnoy. He said the new guy will be fine, though he probably won't push them in any new directions. I think my friend was hoping for a breath of fresh air.
